Dukes Edged By Patriots

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne lacrosse team was edged 10-9 by George Mason on Saturday.

The Dukes (5-7, 2-5 A-10) rallied with four consecutive goals to tie the game at 7-7 at the 7:48 mark in the third quarter. However, the Patriots (6-7, 1-5 A-10) responded with back-to-back goals to regain the lead, which they held for the remainder of the contest. After George Mason extended its lead to 10-8 with 11:54 left to play, the teams went scoreless for over 11 minutes. Gracin Emerson netted a goal with 42 seconds remaining to bring Duquesne within one, but the Patriots controlled the ensuing draw and held on for the win.

Mackenzie Leszczynski led the Dukes with four goals and an assist. She also collected five draw controls, pushing her career total over 200 and moving into second place in Duquesne history. Leszczynski's assist tied her for 10th in program history, making her one of six players to rank in the top-10 for both career goals and assists. It was her fourth consecutive game with multiple goals and her fourth this season with at least four.

Hanna Pawela also made history, surpassing Krista Mann (2003-06) for fifth in program history for career ground balls with three. Pawela now has 159 career ground balls and 148 caused turnovers, the second-most in Duquesne history. She also registered a game-high four caused turnovers in the contest.

Emily King contributed a season-high five ground balls, while Emerson tallied one goal and set a career-high with four ground balls.

Tristen Chang added two goals and a season-high two assists, while Haley Reeck and Corinne Webb also scored for the Dukes.

Megan LaBorne made a season-high 10 saves playing all 60 minutes in goal.

POSTGAME QUOTE

"Today's loss was a tough one. We know we're capable of more and didn't execute the way we expect of ourselves. It's a loss that will stick with us and motivate us moving forward. That said, I'm proud of the fight — Max stepped up with key goals in big moments, even after taking a hard hit, and Meg made some big saves. We just couldn't finish plays when we needed to," said head coach Tracy Coyne postgame.
