STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Nominated by their respective coaches and voted on by athletic administrators, the Duquesne Student-Athlete of the Year awards are presented to student-athletes that have concluded their careers and have excelled in competition and the classroom as well as shown a commitment to leadership and service. A closer look at the three winners …
Maxi Hopfer (Soccer)
Capping a stellar career on the Bluff in 2024, Hopfer, a native of Sytria, Austria, appeared in 66 career matches for the Dukes, including 60 starts. He concluded his career with 65 points, compiling 25 goals and 15 assists, and ranks third all-time in Duquesne history in goals and fourth in points while being tied for eighth in assists. During his final season, Hopfer led the Dukes in scoring with 19 points courtesy of seven goals and five assists. Of his seven markers, five proved to be game-winning goals, which tied for fifth in NCAA Division I along with nine other student-athletes. The NCAA leader in 2024 finished with six game-winning markers, which was accomplished by four players. Hopfer established a new career record in the category during his final season at Duquesne, as almost half (12) of his career goals proved to game-winning scores. Hopfer was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 First Team (2021, 2024) honoree, was named to the rookie team in 2020 and also earned second team accolades in 2022, joining Travis MacKenzie (2004-07) as the only players in program history to earn four postseason honors from the Atlantic 10 throughout a career. Also a member of the 2024 All-Atlantic 10 Academic Team, Hopfer graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science while maintaining a 3.77 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is pursuing a Master of Science in the same realm and has tallied a 3.93 GPA.
Megan McConnell (Basketball) (Co-)
One of the most decorated basketball players in Duquesne history, McConnell capped an impressive career in 2024-25 by finishing with totals of 1,795 points, 1,079 rebounds, 660 assists and 370 steals. The program's all-time leader in games played (144), starts (136), assists and steals, McConnell also registered four career triple-doubles, a school record. She ranks second all-time for the Dukes in both points and rebounds and connected for 209 career three-pointers over five years, which ranks sixth in the Duquesne record book. No stranger to postseason accolades, McConnell was voted the 2025 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year according to conference head coaches. She was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Team in consecutive seasons (2024, 2025) after garnering a spot on the 2023 All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.
