Dukes Power Past Mercyhurst, 20-13

PITTSBURGH — The Duquesne University lacrosse team rallied past Mercyhurst, 20-13, on Thursday afternoon at Rooney Field in its non-conference finale.

Ten different Dukes scored, and 12 recorded points as Duquesne tallied 10 assists on its 20 goals.

The Lakers (0-2) scored the first four goals and jumped out to a 6-1 lead 12 minutes into the contest. However, the Dukes (3-2) responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead and carried a 10-7 advantage into halftime. Mercyhurst regained momentum in the third quarter, briefly reclaiming the lead at 12-10, but Duquesne responded with four straight goals and dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lakers 6-1 to secure the win.

Mackenzie Leszczynski led the Dukes with a game-high five goals and eight points, adding three assists. The senior midfielder played a key role in countering Mercyhurst's second-half surge, either scoring or assisting on four of Duquesne's first five goals after halftime. Leszczynski has now scored in 21 consecutive games.

Reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Week Corinne Webb netted four goals for the third straight game, tying a career high with six points while adding two assists. Webb scored or assisted on four straight goals during DU's 7-2 second-quarter scoring spree.

Tristen Chang provided a fourth quarter spark, scoring twice in a 25-second span at the 8:35 and 8:10 marks. Chang converted a woman-up, free-position goal before adding another score on the next possession, then assisted Gracin Emerson's goal to put Duquesne ahead 18-13 with 4:35 to play. Emerson finished with two goals and two assists.

Freshman Megan Marco recorded her first career goal on an uncontested free-position attempt in the third quarter, tying the game at 12. She later added an unassisted goal with 2:32 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Ali Evans capped the scoring with her first goal of the season, assisted by Abigail Krogmann, who notched her first career assist.

Kelsea Cooke also earned her first career assist, setting up Mia Piocquidio for a goal just two seconds before the halftime horn.

Haley Reeck, Emily King, and Chelsea Evans each scored, as the Dukes reached the 20-goal mark for the first time since April 15, 2023.

Megan LaBorne earned the win in goal with five saves over nearly 24 minutes of action. Korrigan Sweeney also made four saves for the Dukes.

Duquesne outshot Mercyhurst 39-27, marking a season high for the Dukes. The DU defense pressured the Lakers into 23 turnovers and forced five failed clears.

The Dukes closed non-conference play at 3-2, securing back-to-back winning non-conference records for the first time since a four-year stretch from 2011-14.
