YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Corinne Webb scored four goals to lead the Duquesne lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over Youngstown State on Wednesday night inside the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
The Dukes broke a 9-9 tie in the fourth quarter with three straight goals — one from
Gracin Emerson and two from Webb — then held off a late YSU comeback to improve to 2-1. The game featured five ties and three lead changes.
Webb led all scorers with four goals on six shots, converting one of two free-position attempts.
Haley Reeck and
Chelsea Evans each tallied two goals and an assist.
Mackenzie Leszczynski added a goal, two assists and had a game-high seven draw controls.
Addison Scanlon netted her first career goal, while
Emma Raines and Emerson also scored.
Mia Piocquidio also dished out her first career assist.
Freshman
Korrigan Sweeney earned the win in net, recording 10 saves over 54-plus minutes of action in her collegiate debut.
Youngstown State (1-2) took an early 4-2 lead after the first quarter. Duquesne responded with three late goals in a 4-1 second quarter to carry a 6-5 edge into halftime.
YSU opened the third with two quick goals, but Duquesne answered with scores from Leszczynski and Reeck less than a minute apart to regain the lead at 8-7. The teams traded goals until Duquesne's decisive 3-0 run in the fourth put the Dukes ahead for good. The Penguins made it a one-goal game with two minutes left and had two shots in the final 20 seconds. A free-position shot missed wide, then Sweeney put a stamp on the win with a save at the 12-second mark.
It was the third straight one-goal game to start the season for Duquesne.
QUOTABLE
Overall thoughts:
"What an awesome win. We showed a lot of grit and determination throughout the game, especially down the stretch. We had a few mini scoring runs, survived unnecessary turnovers and found a way at the end of the game to gain possession. It wasn't pretty but we got the job done," said head coach
Tracy Coyne.
On the defense:
"The defensive unit was outstanding today. Two players in particular stood out,
Casey McBride and
Korrigan Sweeney. Casey played amazing lockdown defense. She limited the scoring opportunities for one of YSU's top attacking threats, which was a key to the win. Korrigan came in off the bench and quickly made a save. Her play sparked the team's response and changed the energy," noted Coyne.
On the offense:
"I love the fact that we had multiple players score. It's hard to beat a team with multiple threats. A turning point came in the second quarter when we outscored YSU 4-1 and went into half time with a lead. We never looked back.
Corinne showed up for the team today when it mattered most. She got hot late in the game scoring three of our last four goals including back-to-back goals. If we're going to win in the A-10, how we respond throughout the game matters. Corinne embraced the pressure and capitalized by scoring the game winner" said Coyne.
Looking ahead:
"Our goal now is to finish the non-conference schedule on a three-game winning streak," Coyne added.
