Duquesne finishes 3-2 in Baker action at Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team opened its 2025-26 season Friday, posting a record of 3-2 (.600) in Baker action in the first of three days in Struthers, Ohio, at the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State, at Holiday Bowl.
 
RESULTS ORIENTED
Duquesne took on Western Illinois in its first match of the year, as well as marking the first-ever matchup between the two programs, with the Leathernecks earning a 900-827 victory. The Dukes rebounded to claim their first victory of the season, 934-796, over Lewis before dropping a 995-921 decision to No. 20 Wright State. Duquesne closed out the first day of action with a pair of victories, defeating Mercyhurst with its best performance of the afternoon, 1,042-994, before posting a 913-695 victory over Saint Anselm.
 
INSIDE THE GAME
Just two pins separating the Dukes and Lakers after two games and Mercyhurst in front, Duquesne closed the match in a groove with its three best scores of the day. In game three, despite falling the Dukes posted a 237. The swing in the match came in game five, when Duquesne went from trailing by 19 pins to leading by 35 after a 224-170 triumph. The Dukes would seal the victory in game five, earning a 224-211 win.
 
THE LINEUP
The lineup for Duquesne in Baker play in its first day of action of the 2025-26 campaign saw freshman Jazmyn Scott roll first, followed by junior Ivanna Fraticelli, freshman Taylor Miller, senior Emma Siekierski and junior Maribeth Baker. Sophomore Anna Clark also was inserted into the lineup, rolling the first frame starting with game three against Saint Anselm, with Scott getting call in the sixth frame. As a team the Dukes tallied 4,637 total pins, an average of 185.5 per game.
 
UP NEXT
Traditional play is set for Saturday, Oct. 18, with the Dukes opening with a position round against No. 3 Vanderbilt beginning at 9:25 a.m. at Holiday Bowl. It marks the first of five consecutive matches against a ranked opponent, as Duquesne will also take on No. 14 Mount St. Mary's, No. 6 Arkansas State, No. 1 Jacksonville State and No. 4 Youngstown State. The Commodores were the only squad to go undefeated Friday, rolling a perfect 5-0 record with 5,266 total pins. Nebraska, which finished 4-1, knocked down the most pins to open the tournament Friday with 5,404.
