Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne volleyball team wrapped up its opening Atlantic 10 series against George Washington on Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets, 3-0 inside UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Dukes drop to 10-4 on the season, behind a 1-1 mark in conference play.
POINT OF EMPHASIS
The two squads picked up where they left off yesterday, trading points as there were seven ties and a pair of lead changes in the opening stanza. After trading the opening 14 points, the Revolutionaries strung together a 4-1 stint to grab an 11-8 advantage. The Dukes would trim the deficit with a pair of kills from sophomore
Avery Hobson and junior
Ariel Helm but George Washington netted three straight points to hold a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Out of the break, Duquesne would bounce back by scoring six of the next seven points to knot the score at 16-all. Graduate student
Elizabeth Drelling started the stint with a kill, followed by a block from Drelling and sophomore
Jordan Robertson. After a point by George Washington, Duquesne took advantage of a Revolutionaries miscue and an ace from Drelling trimmed the deficit, 16-14. Robertson and junior
Carsyn Henschen would collect a block before a setting error by George Washington tied the score. The Revolutionaries would score five consecutive points before ending the set on a 3-1 stint to take the opening stanza, 25-20.
SET THREE
George Washington would use a .400 swing percentage and 15 kills to take a 2-0 lead in the match in set two. The back-and-forth affair continued in set three as both teams traded the opening 12 points of the set. The Revolutionaries carded three consecutive points to take a 9-6 advantage before a successful swing by Robertson, an ace by Drelling, and an attacking error by George Washington tied the score at 9-9. Later in the set, the Revolutionaries held a two-point lead before another Drelling successful swing and a service ace by junior
Maggie Colenbrander knotted the score at 16-all. George Washington would extend its lead to 20-17 with a 4-1 stint before ending the stanza by scoring four of the final five points to take the match, 25-21.
