Dukes Drop Atlantic 10 Opener

Duquesne fails to score for first time during 2024 season against Spiders

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 action Thursday, falling to Richmond, 1-0, at President's Field at River Road. The Dukes, who had a five-game winning streak snapped, dipped to 6-2 (.750) overall during the 2024 season.
 
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
The Spiders took advantage early, with Kiley Fitzgerald scoring the only goal of the contest just under 11 minutes in. Inside the box, Brigitte Bussiere turned around and fired a shot that hit the top corner of the goal, bouncing back out in front of the net. Junior Lindsay Krafchick tried to clear, by Fitzgerald capitalized, sending it into the net at 10:43. It marked the first career goal for the junior midfielder.
 
PRESSURE
The early portion of the contest saw the teams trade three shots each in the first 14 minutes, including a shot from junior Mackenzie Muir that was turned away by Richmond goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso. The Dukes owned a 6-4 edge in shots in the first half and registered 11 overall during the contest compared to seven for the Spiders. However, Duquesne was unable to get a shot on goal in the final 35 minutes of the contest in an attempt to earn the equalizer, with shots from junior forward Brianna Moore and sophomore Jayden Sharpless in the final five minutes off the mark.
 
NOTES
Thursday's match against Richmond marked the first time during the 2024 season Duquesne failed to score a goal … Muir and Sharpless each finished with three shots for the Dukes, with two on goal for Muir … A total of 20 Spiders saw action while Duquesne used just five substitutes … The Dukes slipped to 11-8-1 (.575) all-time against Richmond and had a five-game winning streak in the series snapped … Playing a full 90 minutes in each game of the road trip were Krafchick, senior Mackenzie Leeder and junior Eva LaVecchia … Duquesne fell to 12-14-2 (.464) all-time in Atlantic 10 openers … Senior goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer posted three saves … The Dukes held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks … Duquesne sported its white uniforms as the Spiders donned red.
 
UP NEXT
A three-game road trip complete, the Dukes return home for their next three matches. Duquesne opens the homestand Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1:00 p.m. against Davidson at Rooney Field and will also host Rhode Island (Sept. 26) and Dayton (Sept. 29).
