Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University rowing team completed its 2023-24 season Saturday by finishing seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Pennsauken, N.J., at Cooper River Park. The Dukes compiled 21 points.
Taking home the team title was Rhode Island, which claimed its third title in the last four years and 10th overall with 51 points. Massachusetts finished second with 46 points, followed by George Washington (45), Fordham (33) and La Salle (29).
Highlighting the competition for Duquesne was the Third Varsity 8, which earned bronze thanks to a time of 7:28.857. The Dukes trailed only UMass (7:22.861) and George Washington (7:25.761). In the Varsity 8, Duquesne won the Petite Final by closing with a time of 7:13.284, outlasting both George Mason (7:19.281) and Dayton (7:28.709).
"I'm very proud of how the team handled all the curveballs thrown our way this entire season," head coach
Matt Carlsen said. "Finishing with a bronze medal in the Third Varsity 8 and a win in the petite final of the Varsity 8 shows the commitment the team made to each other. It marked the best performance from the Varsity 8 in five years, and a huge thank you goes out to our seniors for leading the way and laying the groundwork for next year."
Senior
Bridget Abbott garnered All-Atlantic 10 honors, as she was one of 11 student-athletes named to the 2024 first team. Abbott served as the stroke for Duquesne's Varsity 8 that recorded a time of 7:10.078 in the preliminaries before garnering the win in the Petite Final.
Also for Duquesne at the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship, the Second Varsity 8 finished with a time of 7:18.656 in the finals, while the Varsity 4 closed with a time of 8:19.360.
