WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Emily King fired in a fast-break, game-winning goal with 1:31 to play in overtime to propel the Duquesne University lacrosse team to a 15-14 victory at George Washington on Saturday afternoon. The Dukes even their Atlantic 10 Conference record at 1-1 and improve to 6-3 on the season with the win.
George Washington (3-7, 0-2) was on a clear with less than two minutes remaining in overtime, but
Emelie Curtis knocked the ball loose and King scooped the ground ball near midfield. King outran the GW defense and rifled it to the back of the net to walk it off for Duquesne. The turnover forced by Curtis was the first failed clear of the game for the Revolutionaries (16-for-17).
The Dukes held a 13-9 advantage early in the fourth quarter, but the Revolutionaries rattled off five straight goals to take their first lead of the game (14-13) with 3:44 left to play.
Duquesne's defense forced GW out of bounds and got the ball back with 22 seconds left, trailing by one.
Emelie Curtis drew a shooting space violation and earned a free position attempt with four seconds remaining. Curtis raced in from the arc and went five-hole tying the game with one second on the game clock to force overtime.
Corinne Webb led a balanced offensive attack for the Dukes, that featured nine scorers, with three goals and one assist. Curtis,
Tristen Chang,
Jillian Caroselli, and
Mackenzie Leszczynski all netted two goals, while King,
Emma Raines,
Lindsay Newton, and
Lizzie Cleary charted one score each. Cleary's goal was the first of her career. Leszczynski, Caroselli, Chang, and Curtis all added an assist apiece.
The Dukes jumped out in front 2-0 with goals from Caroselli and Curtis in the opening two minutes. GW tied the game two minutes later at 2-2, but DU never trailed until the 14-13 margin in the fourth quarter. Duquesne answered the 2-2 tie with a 3-0 run and led 8-6 at the half. The Dukes led by as many as four three times in the second half (10-6 at 12:58 in the 3rd quarter, 12-8 at 5:41 in the 3rd quarter, and 13-9 at 13:40 in the 4th quarter).
