Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to First A-10 Win

Brown and Bundy connect in 84th minute for big win at Rhode Island, 1-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - Tight defense and late-game heroics from Margey Brown and Anna Bundy turned out to be the big difference for the Duquesne University women's soccer team, as they beat the University of Rhode Island 1-0 on the road on Thursday night at the URI Soccer Complex for their first road and conference win of the season.

The Dukes (4-5-2, 1-0-2) had a back-and-forth battle against the Rams (0-6-4, 0-1-1) despite the shots being 19-6 the Dukes would get some help with another shutout performance from goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer.

Duquesne had chances to take the lead in the first half including a well-placed shot from sophomore Margey Brown that deflected off a Rhode Island defender before keeper Faith Hutchins punched the shot away.

Karley Steinher led the charge again with two shots, which tied for a team-high, and put one on goal from corners to give some early pressure in the first half but the go-ahead goal eluded Duquesne.

The game went into halftime scoreless and the urgency kicked in for both squads in the second half. Rhode Island turned up the pressure first firing 12 shots to Duquesne's two, however the Rams would only put two of the 12 on goal for Neundorfer to save.

With the game winding down, a long ball from freshman midfielder Jayden Sharpless set up a big attack for DU late in the game. Brown received the pass, made a Ram defender fall, and fired a pass into the penalty box where freshman forward Anna Bundy tapped it in for her second goal of the season nearing the 85th minute.

Duquesne stood strong in the last five minutes and walked away with their first conference and road win in an all-around gutsy performance.

Brown charted her second point in big fashion with the assist and tied for a team-high in two shots for the game with one being on target.

Neundorfer made six saves in her fifth shutout of the season, continuing to be a strong factor for the Dukes' success this season.

Duquesne will look to win two consecutive conference games with its second of two straight road games on Sunday afternoon against St. Bonaventure. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. in New York.
