Women's Soccer Falls in Second Half at Kent State

KENT, Ohio - The Duquesne University women's soccer team lost a tightly contested matchup against Kent State University, 2-1, on Sunday at Dix Stadium.

Duquesne was looking to keep up the defensive showcases after two straight shutout wins against Saint Francis University and FDU. They kept Sunday's game at a standstill through the first half, but couldn't come back from a two-goal deficit in the second half.

The Dukes (3-5) played toe-to-toe against the Golden Flash (3-2-2) with shots being 9-7 for the Golden Flash but there was nothing to show for either side entering the halftime break at a stalemate of 0-0.

Kent State broke the ice in the 58th minute with a strike from Siena Stambolich that beat the Dukes keeper Maddy Neundorfer inside far post. The Golden Flash found the back of the net again in the 75th minute with a goal from forward Amanda Winquist to make the score 2-0.

Duquesne did not give up and on a long free-kick, defender Karley Steinher, launched a long shot on goal that forward Anna Bundy tipped past the keeper for her first career goal to make the game 2-1 in the 80th minute and give some fight back into the team.

The Dukes late rally fell short, as the second goal evaded them despite firing 12 shots with six on goal.

Maya Matesa was again the biggest factor on the offensive side of the ball registering a team-leading four shots in the game with two shots being on goal.

Duquesne will look to rebound and start off conference play strong with a matchup against Davidson on Thursday at Alumni Stadium. Kickoff from Davidson, N.C. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
