VESTAL, N.Y. - The Duquesne volleyball team swept Saint Peter's University, 3-0, in a mutual season opener at the Binghamton Invitational on Friday. The Dukes were powered to victory by strong performances from sophomore Carsyn Henschen and graduate student Morgan Gish in her debut in the Red and Blue.
Duquesne trailed early in the first set, but was able to go on a strong run to win the first set 25-13, powered by 13 kills, 9 of which came from Henschen.
The second set started the same as the first with the Peacocks leading, but the Dukes once again rallied, going on a 7-2 run late. The Peacocks didn't go quietly, scoring enough to keep Duquesne on its toes, but ultimately fell in the set 25-21.
The Dukes powered through the third set after taking an early lead and never let up. DU went on to take the set by a score of 25-13, to clinch the match.
Duquesne was led by the aforementioned Henschen and Gish, both of whom had a hit percentage of .408. Henschen recorded 16 kills, Gish had nine and added nine digs. Freshman Chloe Wilmot posted nine digs and a whopping 30 assists in the match, starting her college career strongly. Sophomore defensive specialist Madison Grimm paced the Dukes back line with 13 digs and tallied three assists of her own.
The Dukes defense held the Peacocks to a .056 hitting percentage and completed eight blocks at the net. Ariel Helm, Wilmot, and Jordan Robertson all had two apiece.
Duquesne will wrap up its opening weekend at the Binghamton Invitational with a doubleheader at 1 and 4:30 pm. First up will be a matchup against the host Bearcats of Binghamton, then DU will battle Merrimack in the night cap, both games can be seen on ESPN+.
