PITTSBURGH— The Duquesne University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss Thursday night to Youngstown State, 2-1, at Rooney Field.
Youngstown State broke free from the Dukes defense in the final minute and scored with 36 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie that stood for 53 minutes and steal the win.
Graduate student
Jaimi Araujo tucked a goal underneath the keeper in the sixth minute to put the Dukes ahead early. It was her second straight game scoring the first goal of the game.
Mackenzie Muir and
Maya Matesa both assisted on the opening score for their second tallies of the season.
Araujo's goal was her 15
th career goal which places her in a tie for ninth all-time at Duquesne. She would finish the night leading the team with a total of five shots.
The Dukes (1-2) kept the pressure on the Penguins (3-0) outshooting them in the first 30 minutes 9-3 and 10-7 in the first half, but could not capitalize.
Youngstown State tied the game up, scoring in the 36
th minute on a header off a corner kick, and the game went to halftime tied 1-1.
In the 72
nd minute,
Anna Campanella blocked an important shot on goal keeping the game tied.
Just a minute before the Penguins' game-winning goal,
Mackenzie Muir laced a shot from nearly 30-yards out but a diving save by the YSU keeper kept the tie intact.
DU finished with six different players who had two or more shots by the end of the game.
Maddy Neundorfer played all 90 minutes in goal for the Dukes and totaled four saves. Junior midfielder
Emma Bundy saw her first action of 2023 playing nine minutes.
Duquesne will play on the road on Sunday against West Virginia University on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
