PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne University women's lacrosse team finished its 2023 season with a 20-4 loss at No. 21-ranked Richmond Saturday afternoon.
The Spiders, who will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament, came into the match scoring the sixth most goals per game in the NCAA and they showed off the high-powered offense right from the start. Richmond outshot the Dukes 33-7 in the first half and kept the visitors off the scoreboard, while building a 14-0 lead.
Mackenzie Leszczynski finally found the back of the net for Duquesne off a free position attempt with 2:40 to play in the third quarter. The Dukes rallied for three more scores in a row at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Spiders answered with four straight goals of their own over the final eight minutes.
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw drove right into the arc and battled through defenders for her A-10 leading 50
th goal of the season 90 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Chelsea Evans followed less than two minutes later with her 31
st goal of her freshman campaign. Rodriguez-Shaw added her second of the day at the 9:12 mark in the fourth to close the season scoring multiple goals in 15 of the 16 games.
Richmond owned a commanding 24-3 draw control advantage, as DU was held without a control in both the first and third quarters. The Spiders totaled a 32-11 lead in shots on goal and 45-14 edge in total shots. In the second half, DU held the Spiders to 11 shots while firing seven, all of which on target.
Duquesne went 1-for-2 from the free position and held Richmond off the board, 0-for-3, from the FP, the second straight game not allowing a free position goal.
The Dukes end the year with a 2-14 overall record and 1-8 mark in conference play.
