Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University volleyball team fell to Davidson, 3-1, Saturday at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse to complete its 2023 season. The Dukes conclude the year with an overall record of 11-15 (.423), including a mark of 6-12 (.333) in the Atlantic 10.
Prior to the match, the Dukes celebrated graduate student
Morgan Gish and
Camille Spencer as part of Senior Day festivities. Gish recorded 10 kills and seven digs, marking her 16th game of the season reaching double figures in kills, including her fourth in a row.
Duquesne took the opening set, 25-22, recording seven blocks in the opener, including two-and-a-half from sophomore
Ariel Helm. Tied in the first set, 12-12, the Dukes used a 5-2 run to grab a 17-14 edge before the Wildcats scored the next four points to go in front. Duquesne steadied, closing on an 8-4 surge to earn the set win.
In the second set Davidson (19-9 / 11-7 A-10) grabbed the lead early, 6-2, en route to a 25-19 triumph. The Wildcats kept up the pressure in the third, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and then adding a 9-3 run to take command of the set in garnering a 25-18 victory. Anna Withee produced four kills during the set as part of a balanced attack for Davidson, which had six student-athletes post between seven and 12 kills in the victory.
The fourth set featured 10 ties and six lead changes, with Davidson scoring 10 of the final 14 points of the match in erasing a 20-16 deficit for a 26-24 win. Sola Omonije finished with a pair of kills during the deciding burst and posted 11 kills in the match. Kayla Davis, meanwhile, posted nine kills in 12 attempts without an error for an attack percentage of .750.
Freshman
Avery Hobson recorded her 10th double-double of the season for the Dukes with a match-high 15 kills to go along with 10 digs. Another rookie, setter
Chloe Wilmot, handed out 38 assists to eclipse 1,000 for the season, finishing the year with 1,025.
Gish led the Dukes during the 2023 season with 346.5 points, while Hobson finished second at 340.5. Hobson produced a team-high 296 kills, one more than teammate
Carsyn Henschen. Gish added 285 on the year.
