WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Duquesne University volleyball team swept George Washington on Saturday from the nation's capital to split the series with its Atlantic 10 rival. The Dukes dominated the stat sheet in kills, hit percentage assists among other stats, and never trailed in the match.
Graduate student Morgan Gish and sophomore Carsyn Henschen each posted 15 kills, a match high. Henschen and Gish now both have eclipsed 170 kills on the season. Duquesne freshman Chloe Wilmot led the match with 39 assists. Wilmot has posted 25+ assists in every match this season.
Duquesne (9-8, 4-5) never trailed in the opening set and led George Washington (7-13, 4-5) by as much as 15-9 at one point. The Dukes would go on to take the set 25-17. Duquesne's hit rate was a whopping .406 to the .111. Henschen posted five kills in the first set.
For the second set in a row Duquesne took the lead and never surrendered it. The set was tied at 17, but Duquesne finished strong, winning 25-23. Three different Dukes: Henschen, Gish, and freshman Avery Hobson, recorded a kill down the stretch to give the Dukes a two-set advantage.
The third set saw another Duquesne lead, this time a 4-0 start. A 10-4 Duquesne run in the middle of the frame saw the Dukes hold a 22-13 lead late, and three kills from Morgan Gish secured the match.
Duquesne had double the kills the Revolutionaries did in the third set, and out-hit them .344 to .080. Duquesne also had three aces in the third set and didn't allow GW to have any.
The Dukes are back home next weekend for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader with Rhode Island inside UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. First serve will be at 6 PM and 4 PM, respectively.
