Duquesne Goes 3-1 To Open Penguin Classic

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University bowling team opened its 2023-24 season Friday with the first of three days competing in the 2023 Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State, in Struthers, Ohio, at Holiday Bowl.
 
The Dukes opened the year with a 3-1 (.750) record in Baker play, earning a season-opening victory over Bryant, 961-929, and also posting wins over Lewis (950-930) and Saint Francis (979-811).
 
For the opening day of action, the lineup of Kiearra Saldi, Ranelle Ulanday, Brenna Gleim, Maribeth Baker and Shannon Small and also included Ivanna Fraticelli and Emma Siekierski racked up 4,745 total pins, which sits fifth in a 13-team field. 

Duquesne recorded an average of 949 pins per set in Baker play to open the 2023-24 season, including an average score of 189.8. Despite an 898-840 loss in its second Baker match of the day against #16 Mercyhurst, the Dukes used the bye to their advantage, bouncing back for a pair of victories.   
 
Traditional play of the 2023 Penguin Classic begins at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, with the Dukes taking on Wright State in lanes 19 and 20. Duquesne will follow by facing Valparaiso, Arkansas State, the host Penguins and Morgan State.
