CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Duquesne University volleyball team defeated the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles Saturday afternoon in four sets at the Chattanooga Classic.
Duquesne improves to 2-8 while USI drops to 0-9.
Despite dropping the first set, the Dukes dominated the rest of the match. This match snaps a four-game streak of playing in five-set matches.
Freshman
Carsyn Henschen led the Dukes' attack today with 14 kills. She added two blocks and four digs as well.
Graduate student
Elizabeth Osborn had one less kill than Henschen with 13 of her own. She also notched a team-high 14 digs.
Sophomore
Madison Floyd recorded a career-high 10 kills today. Known for her defense, she also picked up four blocks.
Freshman
Ariel Helm also notched 10 kills, marking back-to-back games with double-digit kills. She also recorded four blocks.
Senior
Hailey Poling recorded a season-high 48 assists.
As a team, Duquesne had a .254 hitting percentage compared to USI's .130.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duquesne could not find its groove in the first set, as noted by the eight attack errors in this set. Despite the mistakes, the Dukes were still able to keep it relatively close throughout the set. The Dukes were within three at 20-17, but ultimately could not come back.
The second set, and really the rest of the match, was all Duquesne. The Dukes went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 lead, then went on another 5-0 run later in the set to take a 17-10 lead. The cushion was more than enough for Duquesne, as it went on to take this set 25-15.
Duquesne ripped off a 10-2 run at the beginning of the third set to give itself an 11-5 lead. The Dukes would eventually stretch that lead out to 19-11, and once again, that was more than enough for Duquesne to hold on. USI was able to grab 19 points this set to make it a little closer, but the result was never truly in doubt.
In the fourth and final set, Duquesne did not let up at all. It was another early run by the Dukes, this time a 5-0 run, to give them an early lead of 12-6. Just like in the previous two sets, USI never got closer than three points as the Dukes cruised to victory. Duquesne scored seven of the last 10 points to win this set 25-15.
