UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Duquesne University volleyball team dropped its final game of the Penn State Invitational to UConn Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-0.
The Dukes drop to 0-3 on the season while UConn moves to 1-1.
Another strong effort by some of the young Dukes just wasn't enough as UConn was able to hold Duquesne off to win in straight sets.
Freshman
Carsyn Henschen had the best game of her young career, ending with 11 kills to lead all players.
Freshman
Ariel Helm had yet another strong game, ending with eight kills and a team-leading .312 hitting percentage.
Senior
Hailey Poling recorded 10 or more assists and digs for the second time through three games, notching 31 assists and a team-leading 13 digs.
Freshman
Hanna Wilson had 11 digs of her own, making it the second-straight games she was in double-digits in that category.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dukes fell behind early in set one, with the Huskies going up 10-2 to start the match. Duquesne battled back, getting the score as close as 13-9, but the Huskies went on another big run to wrap up the set.
The second set was much closer, but ended in heart-breaking fashion for Duquesne. This set was tight the entire time, with neither team leading by more than three at any point. The Dukes held the narrow lead for the majority of the set, but UConn's late push was able to give it the 26-24 set win. Henschen was great for the Dukes with five kills in set two alone.
The final set was, unfortunately, not as close. The Dukes stayed within three or four points for the first half of the set, but the Huskies ripped off a 6-2 run to give themselves a 17-10 lead, which Duquesne was never able to recover from.
GAME NOTES
- Henschen's 11 kills were not only a career high, but they were the most by any Duquesne player this season. She leads the team with 23 kills through three games.
- Helm is second on the team with 21.5 points so far this year and is tied for second with 15 kills. She also leads the team with 12 blocks.
- Poling leads the team with 71 assists and 34 digs through three matches.
