Women's Soccer Opens Season Against Ohio Thursday

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's soccer team opens its 2022 regular season with a home match against Ohio Thursday at 4:00 p.m. ET at Arthur J. Rooney Field.  
 
The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.

  • Duquesne was picked to finish in 10th place by the league's coaches in the annual Atlantic 10 women's soccer preseason poll. 
  • The Dukes return eight starters from the 2021 season, including five of their top six scorers. 
  • DU's all-time record in season openers is 11-15-2, but its all-time record in home openers is 13-9-5.
  • The Dukes went 4-3-1 when playing on Rooney Field in 2021.
  • Since 2015, the Dukes have boasted a 42-18-9 record at Rooney Field, while outscoring the opposition by a mark of 120-63 in those matches.
  • Sophomore forward Emma Bundy led the team and ranked third in the A-10 with 1.33 points per game and 0.556 goals per game despite playing in just nine matches due to injury last season. 
  • Junior forward Jaimi Araujo, who also missed time due to injury in 2021, scored four times and had 10 points on the season. Her and Bundy look to lead the Dukes' attack in 2022.
  • Sophomore defender Karley Steinher missed the last six games of the season, but still managed to rack up nine points and three goals last year. 
  • Senior defender Ashley Rodriguez started all 16 games last year and tallied the most minutes on the team with 1,483. She scored on two penalty kicks in 2021.
  • The Dukes averaged 1.188 goals per game last season, which ranked fifth in the A-10.
  • Duquesne ranked fourth in the A-10 with 6.00 shots on-goal per game and fifth with 11.69 shots per game.
  • The team was disciplined in 2021, committing the second-least amount of fouls in the conference with 129.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH AL ALVINE (Robert Morris '92)
  • Al Alvine is in his 11th season as the head coach of the Dukes in 2022.
  • The Dukes' all-time winningest coach boasts a record of 70-82-22 on the Bluff and 35-48-10 in Atlantic 10 play. His career mark stands at 200-147-40.
  • Alvine inherited a three-win team prior to the 2012 season and quadrupled that total in four years. 
  • He set a program record with 12 victories in 2015 – which included the program's first-ever A-10 Championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
  • His teams have totaled 11 or more wins three times during his tenure.
  • Alvine has coached four First-Team and three Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 picks, including 2017 A-10 Midfielder of the Year Linnea Faccenda.
  • He was named the fifth head coach in Duquesne women's soccer history on December 29, 2011.
  • Alvine came to the Bluff after spending five seasons as head coach at California University of Pennsylvania, where he went 72-28-11 – including a 38-2-6 mark over his final two seasons with the Vulcans. 
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS (ROSTER | SCHEDULE | 2021 STATS)
  • Ohio had a very solid 2021 season, going 11-5-3 overall 7-1-1 at home.
  • The Bobcats were 4-3-2 on the road last season.
  • OU's 2021 season came to a close in the MAC Touranament semifinals at the hands of Kent State, who beat the Bobcats, 3-2.
  • Junior forward Shae Robertson returns for Ohio. She was tied for the team-lead with 11 points and led the Bobcats with five goals. She played in all 19 games. 
  • Redshirt senior Haley Miller also returns. She scored four times in 2021.
  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sam Wexell returns for a fifth year in green and white. She led the MAC with nine shutouts in 2021.
  • Ohio welcomed three transfers and seven freshman to its 2022 team.
OHIO HEAD COACH AARON RODGERS (North Texas, '96)
  • Aaron Rodgers is in his ninth season as the Ohio Head Coach.
  • Rodgers won the MAC Coach of the Year in 2021 while four of his players were named to All-MAC teams. 
  • In 2021, he helped lead the Bobcats to their best regular season winning percentage (.694) since the 2002 season.
  • In 2019, Ohio earned its first 10-win season since 2003, and advanced to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament.
  • Before coming to Ohio, he spent four seasons at the University of Kentucky, helping them to a 42-30-5 record during his time there.
  • He won the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Championships with the Wildcats.
  • He has also spent time on the staff of Florida, Alabama and his alma mater, North Texas.
