Richmond Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Dukes

Ayers III scores 14 for DU

PITTSBURGH - Tyler Burton had an 18-12 double-double and Richmond (14-8, 5-4) shot 55 percent in the second half to pull away for a 74-57 win over Duquesne (6-13, 1-6) at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The win was the Spiders' fifth-straight over the Dukes in Pittsburgh.

Leon Ayers III scored 14 and Toby Okani added 13 for Duquesne which was outscored 39-25 in the second half.

Primo Spears had a career high-tying seven assists for DU.

Duquesne had seven players score in building a 26-17 lead. Richmond then found its range, outscoring the Dukes 18-6 over the final 8:04 to take 35-32 lead on a Burton 3-pointer at the first half horn.

DU's Tre Williams, who finished with 10 points, netted the first basket out of the half, before Richmond scored eight-straight to take a 43-34 lead on an Andre Gustavson 3-pointer.

UR extended its run to 10-0 before Spears found Okani for an alley-oop dunk.

Jacob Gilyard, who finished with 17 points, answered with a 3-pointer to give Richmond a 48-36 lead.

Williams' and Okani's baskets were the Dukes' only field goals in over nine minutes as the UR lead ballooned to 60-38.

Duquesne briefly cut to 13 on a Williams layup, before Burton converted a four-point play that made it 69-51 with a little over five minutes left.

Richmond went 7-of-11 from the arc in the second half.

Duquesne, which shot 4-of-21 from 3-point, was 0-of-10 from the arc in the second half.

Duquesne heads to Richmond, Va. to take on VCU on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN+).  

NOTES
  • Primo Spears finished with seven assists, tying his career high set in the season opener vs. Rider.
  • This was the first time the combination of Easley Jr., Williams, Okani, Acuff and Spears started since a 78-70 win over Bradley at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 22.
  • Richmond has now won the past five series meetings in Pittsburgh, with DU's last win coming on Feb. 4, 2012 (81-72) before a sellout crowd at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
  • Richmond's largest lead was 22, at 60-38 with 10:26 left ... Duquesne's largest lead was nine at 26-17 with 8:05 left in the first half ... there was one tie and three lead changes before UR took the lead for good on Tyler Burton's 3-pointer that made it 35-32 at the first half horn ... Richmond led for 20:55 ... Duquesne led for 16:55.
