Dukes Fall to Loyola in A-10 Championship Semifinal

PITTSBURGH - A Marc Torrellas goal in the 59th minute was the difference as Loyola Chicago (9-2-6) defeated  Duquesne (11-4-4), 1-0, to advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship final Wednesday night on Rooney Field.

The result not only avenged a 2-1 win by the Dukes over the Ramblers on Sept. 17, but also snapped DU's home unbeaten streak at a school record 16 games.

Duquesne, which was looking to advance to the title game for the second consecutive year, battled to the end, getting of three shots in the final 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

Loyola finished with a 21-13 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal.

LUC keeper Simon Jillson's lone save came in the 70th minute, when Duquesne's Jacob Casha popped a cross to Anthony DiFalco, whose low shot was knocked away at the right post.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Loyola strung together four consecutive corner kicks in the first three minutes of the match, but came up empty.
  • LUC's John Gates fired a shot just over the crossbar in the 34th minute for one of the better chances for either team to that point.
  • DU's Maxi Hopfer ran down a ball along the right sideline and crossed it to Anthony DiFalco, whose header sailed high in the closing minutes of the half.
  • Loyola outshot Duquesne 10-5, including 3-0 on net, in the opening 45.
  • DU earned a corner in the 57th minute but was unable to manufacture a shot.
  • Loyola got on the board shortly thereafter when Gates found Marc Torrellas in front in the 59th minute.
  • Jacob Casha popped a cross to DiFalco, who rolled it to the right post, but the ball was stopped by a diving Simon Jillson in the 70th minute. DiFalco's effort was DU's first shot on goal.
  • Torrellas rifled a shot just over the Duquesne crossbar in the 73rd minute.
  • Christoffer Vie Angell placed a hard shot north of the net in the 76th minute.
  • Cameron Territo cross a ball that just missed connecting with a diving Jayden Da late in the match.
  • DU keeper Domenic Nascimben finished with five saves for DU.
  • Loyola finished with 15 corners, to seven for Duquesne.
  • The match was played before a record crowd of 1,055.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"You get to this time of season, semifinals in front of 1,000-plus fans and what an environment that the students have created for us.
"Pittsburgh loves its winners and I think we've been able to put on a good show for a couple of years now. This one hurts, no doubt, every loss does, but we have to learn from it and continue to grow.
"Our goal is can we continue to move forward with this program? Can we bring in the right character guys with the work rate, energy and talent to continue to elevate. Then crowds like this become the norm.
"That's the culture we want to create on this campus that can absolutely be a campus that can win championships and go after big things season in and season out."
