SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Duquesne University volleyball team beat Saint Louis in four sets in the season finale Saturday evening.
Duquesne ends its season 8-22 (5-13 A-10) while Saint Louis completes the regular season with an 18-12 (10-8 A-10) record.
Duquesne did not make the A-10 Championship, but the team was much improved down the stretch, ending the season 4-4 in its last eight matches played.
In this one, graduate student
Elizabeth Osborn dominated offensively for the Dukes. She had 19 kills on a .471 hitting percentage and ended the day with five blocks.
Senior
Morgan Kelly and freshman
Carsyn Henschen had 10 kills each and Kelly was able to tack on three blocks.
Senior
Anita Parrott and freshman
Ariel Helm had four blocks each and Parrott totaled nine kills.
Senior
Hailey Poling had 45 assists tonight and ends the regular season as the A-10 leader in that category, as well as cementing her place as one of the best setters in Duquesne history.
Senior
Ashley Larson recorded a team-high 14 digs in what was possibly her last match as a Duke.
Duquesne was great from the service line as it had 11 aces compared to just four for the Billikens.
The Dukes started this match off on fire, as an early 8-1 run propelled them to a commanding 14-6 lead. Another run, this one being 6-0, gave the Dukes a 23-12 advantage, all but wrapping up set one.
Set two was a different story, as it was close the entire way until Saint Louis had Duquesne with its back up against the wall while leading 24-21. The Dukes ended up scoring seven of the next nine points to win the second set 28-26.
The Dukes jumped out to a 5-0 lead in set three and looked set to end this in three-straight, but Saint Louis fought back and held Duquesne off for at least one more set. The Billikens won set three 25-22.
The fourth set was the complete opposite, as it was Saint Louis who jumped out to the 5-0 lead. Duquesne had the lead back quickly at 8-7, then the two teams went back-and-forth all the way until it was tied at 23-23. After losing the next point, Duquesne took the next three to win the match.
