FAIRFAX, Va. – The Duquesne University volleyball team began its two-match weekend at George Mason with a 3-0 loss Friday evening.
Duquesne falls to 4-18 (1-9 A-10) while George Mason improves to 6-15 (2-8 A-10).
The Dukes didn't have their best night and fell in straight sets to the Patriots.
Senior
Morgan Kelly still had a solid night offensively, notching a team-high seven kills. Freshman
Hanna Wilson set a new season high with six kills while also tallying a block and a team-high eight digs.
Senior
Anita Parrott had five kills of her own while also recording a block.
Senior
Hailey Poling handled the setting duties and had 20 assists. She also pitched in with seven digs.
The Dukes had only three service errors compared to George Mason's 10, but Duquesne's 18 attack errors put them at a disadvantage, as the Patriots had only 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set started well enough for the visitors, as Duquesne trailed by one before George Mason went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Dukes scored a couple in a row, but the Patriots went on a 10-3 run to give themselves a comfortable lead.
It was tighter the second time around, and started great for Duquesne as it took an early 10-5 lead. Following a timeout by George Mason, the home side went on a 9-2 run to give it a two-point advantage. The set would be tied on four separate points shortly after until George Mason took the lead for good at 20-19. It then scored five-straight points for the win.
Unfortunately for the Dukes, the third set looked similar to the first for most of the way. Starting down 5-0, Duquesne soon found itself in a 9-2 hole. The Dukes weren't done fighting yet though, as they scored five-straight to force a George Mason timeout at 10-7. After getting the deficit down to two points, the Dukes let the set slip away and found themselves down 20-12. They would take four out of five points late in the set to make it 23-18, but the points came too late as the Patriots took the third.
