Hopfer's brace lifts No. 25 Dukes to 2-1 win over Davidson

DU records back-to-back 10-win seasons for first time since 2005 & 2006.

PITTSBURGH - Co-captain Maxi Hopfer scored twice as No. 25 Duquesne (10-1-3, 4-0-2), maintained its hold on first place in the Atlantic 10 with a 2-1 win over Davidson (4-8-3, 1-4-1) Saturday evening on Rooney Field.

The win, which extended DU's home unbeaten streak to 14 games, was the Dukes' 10th of the season, marking the first time since 2005 & 2006 that Duquesne has posted back-to-back 10-win seasons.

Hopfer, DU's leading scorer last season, netted goals in the 22nd and 61st minutes in recording the fourth brace of his career.

The Austrian's first goal came at the end of a run that began at midfield, while the game-winner came off a long ball from Cam Territo that led to a cross from Elmar Jonsson.

Hopfer finished Duquesne's 2-0 week with three goals and a pair of assists.

Domenic Nascimben finished with five saves for the Dukes, including three in the final 23 minutes to preserve the Duquesne lead.

Duquesne will have a one day break before heading across town for a non-league game versus Pitt on Monday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. (ACCN).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jacob Casha had Duquesne's first chance with a hard shot 11th minute.
  • Hopfer converted from the left side after a long run from midfield in the 22nd to make it 1-0. It was Hopfer's fourth goal of the season and second this week.
  • Nate Dragisich put a pair of shots on net in a two-minute span (28' & 30') but came up empty.
  • Duquesne had a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half.
  • DU also had six corners to two for Davidson in the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Dukes were whistled for a foul in the box in the 52nd minute leading to Denis Krioutchenkov's game-tying penalty kick goal.
  • Nine minutes later, Cam Territo played a long ball to Elmar Jonsson on the left side. Jonsson found Hopfer in front of the net for the left-foot volley that proved to be the game-winner.
  • Nascimben came up big in the 67th minute, diving to his right to stop a shot from Jack Brown.
  • Nascimben made another clutch short-sided safe of a shot from Connor Smith in the 71st minute.
  • Nascimben also turned away the Wildcats' last scoring chance, off the foot of Nicholas Cavallo in the 89th minute.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"We talk all season about 'controlling the controllables' and I thought tonight was a perfect example of that. You're allowed to bend, but we didn't break and ultimately they controlled what they could and took care of business."

On the play of co-captain Maxi Hopfer: "I think its awesome. Its awesome for everybody involved. We've found ways to win all season, but when your talisman can hit the back of the net for a brace, that's a wonderful feeling."
