PREVIEW: Women's Soccer vs. Youngstown State

Dukes look to remain unbeaten at home this season

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's soccer team (1-1-1) will look to bounce back when it hosts Youngstown State (0-4) for a non-conference match on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Rooney Field. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

  • Duquesne is coming off of a 3-0 loss at No. 12 West Virginia this past Sunday (Box Score).
  • Goalkeeper Megan Virgin kept the Mountaineers off of the scoreboard for the first 33 minutes of the match. She totaled four saves and made multiple high-difficulty saves to keep the Dukes within striking distance.
  • Duquesne was playing for the second time in three days. The Dukes played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Valparaiso on Friday, Aug. 27.
  • Duquesne trailed 1-0, before it scored two goals five minutes and two seconds apart to take the lead early in the second half.
  • Jaimi Araujo netted the first goal in the 59th-minute off of a pass from Emma Bundy. Meanwhile, Bundy collected the go-ahead goal in the 64th-minute.
  • Bundy, who also scored in the team's season-opening win over Saint Francis, ranks fifth in the A-10 with five points and second in the league with 1.67 points per game.
  • Despite only attempting three shots versus WVU, the Dukes rank second in the A-10 with 8.33 shots on goal per game. The team also slots second in the A-10 and 19th in the NCAA with a shot accuracy of 62.5 percent.
  • Hannah Nguyen notched assists on each of the first two goals in the season-opener against Saint Francis. It was her first multi-point game since posting a goal and an assist versus St. Bonaventure on Oct. 24, 2019.
  • Nguyen was the first player with a multi-assist game since former Dukes player Lauren Bell collected two helpers in a 6-0 win over Youngstown State on Sept. 15, 2019.
  • The Dukes were picked to finish 10th in the annual Atlantic 10 women's soccer preseason poll announced earlier this month.
  • Since 2015, the Dukes have boasted a 39-15-9 record at Rooney Field, while outscoring the opposition by a mark of 109-53 in those matches. 
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH AL ALVINE (Robert Morris '92)
  • Al Alvine enters his 10th season as the head coach of the Dukes in 2021.
  • The Dukes' all-time winningest coach boasts a record of 67-75-21 on the Bluff and 33-41-9 in Atlantic 10 play.
  • Alvine inherited a three-win team prior to the 2012 season and quadrupled that total in four years.
  • He set a program record with 12 victories in 2015 – which included the program's first-ever A-10 Championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
  • His teams have totaled 11 or more wins three times during his tenure.
  • Alvine has coached four First-Team and three Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 picks, including 2017 A-10 Midfielder of the Year Linnea Faccenda.
  • He was named the fifth head coach in Duquesne women's soccer history on December 29, 2011.
  • Alvine came to the Bluff after spending five seasons as head coach at California University of Pennsylvania, where he went 73-28-11 – including a 38-2-6 mark over his final two seasons with the Vulcans. 
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS (ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS)
  • The Penguins are coming off of a 2-1 loss to Marshall on Thursday evening. YSU scored in the 81st-minute to slice its deficit in half, but were unable to find the equilizer on several chances in the final eight minutes of the contest.
  • Chole Casello and Maddie Root have found the back of the net for YSU this season. Root scored her first-career goal in the Marshall loss.
  • Although the Penguins have been out-scored 12-2 in their four matches this season, they have two one-goal losses on their ledger.
  • The Penguins opened the season with losses at Bucknell, Kent State and Wake Forest.
  • Goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj made a season-high nine saves in the 1-0 loss at Bucknell.
  • Youngstown State was picked to finish eighth in the Horizon League preseason poll.
  • The Penguins went 1-7-1 in the spring 2021 season.
  • YSU's lone win came when it posted a 4-1 win over Robert Morris in the spring finale.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE HEAD COACH BRIAN SHRUM (California (Pa.), '09)
  • Former Duquesne Associate Head Coach Brian Shrum enters his fourth season at YSU.
  • Shrum owns a career-record of 6-37-6 as head coach of the Penguins.
  • The Penguins won multiple Horizon League games in 2019 for the first time since 2015 under Shrum.
  • He served as an assistant for six seasons on Al Alvine's staff from 2012-17.
  • The Dukes went 34-22-7 during his tenure as an assistant with an 18-10-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play.
