Duquesne Clipped in Overtime by UMass in Atlantic 10 Opener

Minutewomen score on an own-goal to deal Dukes the loss

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's soccer team (2-4-1, 0-1 A-10) were dealt a 2-1 overtime-loss by Massachusetts (5-2-2, 1-0 A-10) in both teams' Atlantic 10 opener Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field.

Duquesne got on the board first in the third minute of the match. Hannah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) sent in a corner kick off of the head of Lexy Kendro (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). After pinballing off of two Minutewomen players, the ball found the foot of Emma Bundy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), who tapped the ball into the left side of the goal for her fourth of the season.

The ensuing 42 minutes of the first half was played evenly. Both defenses limited scoring opportunities, sending the Dukes into the half with the one-goal lead.

UMass tied the match up five minutes into the second half. A lead pass by Karina Groff allowed Chandler Pedolzky to get behind the Duquesne backfield. DU goalkeeper Megan Virgin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) came out of the net to try and make a play, but Pedolzky dribbled around Virgin and converted into the empty net.

The Dukes had a prime scoring chance in the 55th-minute when Sarah Wilkinson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) took a shot from inside the box that was blocked in front of the net. UMass quickly countered and had a shot attempt of its own from inside the box, but Ashley Rodriguez (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) blocked that shot attempt to keep the match knotted at 1-1.

Duquesne had another scoring opportunity in the 87th-minute when a free-kick found the foot of Jaimi Araujo (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) inside the box, but UMass goalkeeper Megan Olszewski's aggressive play in net denied the scoring chance.

UMass nearly scored the game-winning goal in regulation on a shot attempt into an empty net as time expired. However the referee waived the shot off and determined that it crossed the goal-line after the horn had already sounded, sending the match into overtime.

The Minutewomen came up with the game-winning goal with 56 seconds left in the first overtime period. UMass's Mia Carazza took a shot from about 30 yards out that deflected off of a Dukes player and past Virgin to end the contest.

UMass held a 15-to-10 edge in shot attempts, including the only two shots in the overtime period.

Bundy has now scored a goal in each of the Dukes four home games at Rooney Field this season. She leads the team in both goals (4) and points (9) this season.

The Dukes will return to Rooney Field on Thursday, Sept. 23 to take on Atlantic 10 preseason-favorite Saint Louis. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN+.
