PITTSBURGH – The Dukes (1-0-1) scored twice in a six-minute span, but a late goal by Valparaiso (0-2-1) and two scoreless extra sessions gave the Duquesne women's soccer team a 2-2 tie with the Beacons in non-conference play Friday night at Rooney Field.
Valparaiso got the game's first goal in the 17
th-minute on a counter attack that allowed Beacon forward Kelsie James to find the back of the net and make the score 1-0.
Â
Valpo took the lead into halftime, but the Dukes stormed back with a flurry of scoring chances early in the second half. After a trio of shots just missed the mark,
Emma Bundy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) sent a ball on net that rebounded out to
Jaimi Araujo (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca). Araujo lunged forward with her left foot and redirected the ball into the back of the net to tie the game up in the 59
th-minute.
Â
The Dukes took the lead just over five minutes later.
Ashley Rodriguez (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) played a free-kick into the box where
Karley Steinher (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) headed the ball towards the goal. After a quick scrum, Bundy collected the ball and put it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season to put the Dukes on top.
Â
Valpo managed to knot the game back up in the 80
th-minute of the match. The Beacons were awarded a free kick from just outside the box, and Kelsie James tucked the ball perfectly into the top-right corner past goalkeeper
Megan Virgin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) to tie the game up and send it into overtime.
Â
Valparaiso held a 3-to-1 edge in shots on goal in the two overtime sessions, but nothing found the back of the net, resulting in a tie.
Â
The two teams were also evenly matched on the final stat sheet. Valpo held a 22-to-18 edge in shot attempts. The Beacons did enjoy a 7-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Each goalkeeper made saves to keep their teams in position to earn the win. Virgin finished with eight saves, while Valpo's Nikki Coryell made nine saves.
Â
The Dukes will have less than 48 hours to recover before their meeting with No. 12 West Virginia on Sunday, August 29 in Morgantown at 5 p.m.

QUOTEABLES
"It was probably a fair result on the balance of play. They're a good team, they're 0-2, but they have a lot of athletes and are big, strong and physical. We challenged the team at halftime to up their compete-level and take the game to them. I couldn't have been more proud of the response. The first 20-25 minutes of that second half it wasn't a question of if, it was a question of when. I knew we were going to score at that point and we got two goals." - Al Alvine, Duquesne head women's soccer coach
