Dukes and Flyers clash for second time on Saturday afternoon in Dayton

Duquesne women's soccer (1-2-1, 1-1-1), coming off a hard-fought 1-0 defeat at Saint Louis on Sunday, returns to the road to face Dayton (4-3-1, 1-1-1) at UD's Baujan Field on Saturday, Mar. 27 at 1:00 p.m.

This is the fourth of eight scheduled conference games for the Dukes, who are competing in the A-10 West Division with Dayton, St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis.  

The Dukes and Flyers tied 1-1 2OT in the first meeting between the two in Pittsburgh on Mar. 14.

Due to a schedule conflict, there will be no live stream for Saturday's match.


THE SPRING SEASON
  • The Atlantic 10 has been split into three divisions for conference play. The North Division consists of Fordham, La Salle, UMass, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's and the South Division is made up of Davidson, George Mason, George Washington, Richmond and VCU.
  • Duquesne, which is in the lone four-team division, will play three games against St. Bonaventure (W, 1-0) , three against Saint Louis (L, 0-1) and two against Dayton (T, 1-1 2OT).
  • The Dukes were picked to finish ninth out of 14 teams in the A-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, Saint Louis was picked first, Dayton fourth and St. Bonaventure 13th.

THE SERIES VS. DAYTON
  • Dayton leads the all-time series 17-3-3. In matches at Dayton, the Flyers lead 10-2-0.
  • The series has taken a dramatic turn in recent years, as the Dukes are 2-1-3 vs. UD in the past six meetings including a win and a tie in its last to trips to Dayton.
  • Head coach Al Alvine is 2-3-3 against Dayton.

LAST GAME
  • Duquesne limited one of the most potent offenses in the nation to one goal, but it was all No. 22 Saint Louis needed in extending its Atlantic 10 regular season win streak to 23 games with a 1-0 win over the Dukes at Hermann Stadium.
  • Deena DeBaldo led the Dukes with a pair of shots, while Lexy Kendro and Sarah Wilkinson registered DU's shots on goal.
  • Megan Virgin was outstanding in net with five saves for Duquesne.
  • SLU, which entered the match ranked tied for eighth nationally in shots per game, outshot DU 14-5, including 6-2 on goal.

SCOUTING THE DUKES
  • Duquesne played one non-conference match (a 3-0 loss at Pitt on March 7).
  • The Dukes graduated one player from last year's 6-8-3 team. DU's entire offense of 22 goals, 15 assists and 59 points is back.
  • Atlantic 10 Second Team selection senior Deena DeBaldo returns after tallying nine goals. Her 22 points were the fourth-most in program history.    
  • Sophomore Jaimi Araujo had 10 points, including four goals in 2019.
  • Megan Virgin returns after starting all 17 games in net for Duquesne last season.
  • Head coach Al Alvine, who has led the Dukes to an A-10 postseason appearance in four of the last five seasons, is in his ninth year at DU. Alvine led DU to the program's first A-10 Championship in 2015. He is in his 19th season as a head coach overall.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
  • Dayton, which has been playing since Feb. 6, played five nonconference games in addition to a scrimmage vs. Akron (W, 3-1).
  • The Flyers are 1-1-1 in the A-10 with a win at St. Bonaventure and 3-2 2OT home loss to Saint Louis in addition to its tie with Duquesne.
  • Freshman Itala Gemelli leads UD in shots (19), shots on goal (10), points (10) and goals (5).
  • Sophomore Jessica Sheldon has a team-high five assists.
  • The Flyers have 23 more fouls than their opponents (87-64).
  • UD is averaging 12.3 shots per game to 11.8 for their opponents.

MORE ON THE DUKES
  • Deena DeBaldo freshman Emma Bundy have DU's two goals this season.
  • DeBaldo's next point will move her into DU's all-time Top 10, as will her next goal (see below).
  • DeBaldo leads the team in shots (14) and shots on goal (6). Lexy Kendro is next with 11 shots, including five on net.
  • Goalkeeper Megan Virgin, the Mar. 22 A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, had a season-high eight saves in the first meeting with Dayton. She had five saves in Sunday's 1-0 loss at Saint Louis.
