Dukes Fall to Panthers, 1-0

Lone PK the difference

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne, playing its first match since Nov. 2, 2019, held Pitt to a lone first half penalty kick goal in falling to the Panthers, 1-0, at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Dukes, with just seven returnees from last year's roster, stayed connected throughout in limiting Pitt's scoring chances.

Pitt played eight fall matches in rising to the No. 1 spot in the nation at one point in advancing to the ACC Championship final game.

DU keeper Domenic Nascimben, in just his fifth career start, was solid in net with four saves.

Newcomer Ryan Goodhew led the Dukes with two shots.

Pitt finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 margin in shots on goal.

Duquesne returns to action at Noon on March 13 when it opens Atlantic 10 play at St. Bonaventure.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pitt had the first chance of the game when Veljko Petkovic got a shot off from just outside the six that was knocked away by DU's Domenic Nascimben. Valentinn Noel's shot off the rebound sailed high of the net.
  • The match remained relatively even when Duquesne's Ryan Goodhew was assessed a yellow card in the box following a Pitt free kick. Pitt's Bryce Washington converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 36th minute for the lone score of the half.
  • Two minutes later, Goodhew sent a low shot from the top of the box just right of the net in the 38th minute.
  • Pitt outshot Duquesne 4-3 in the half, including 2-0 on goal.
  • Duquesne's Jack Shearer had a shot headed for the bottom left, saved by Pitt's Nico Campuzano in the 53rd minute.
  • Washington had an attempt of a Pitt corner in the 60th minute but was unable to bring the ball down and get a good foot on it.
  • Noel had an opportunity from point blank in front of the Duquesne net in the 66th minute but shot it high.
  • The Dukes were forced to play a man down when Jordy Lopez picked up his second yellow card in the 68th minute.
  • Pitt's Brandon Clagette sent a shot from the top of the box to the bottom right that was saved by Nascimben in the 70th minute.
