A Phantastic Phinish

Dukes stun St. Joe's in Philly with two goals in last 5:06 to advance in the A-10 Championship

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Sixth seeded Duquesne (9-6-2) scored twice in the final 5:06 to stun No. 3 seed Saint Joseph's (8-9-1) - 2-1 in Philadelphia - to advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinal round.

Tom Tzabari scored his first career goal in the 85th minute and Jaime Borjas added his first goal as a Duke in the 88th, to give Duquesne its first win in A-10 Championship play since a 2-1 semifinal victory over host Richmond in 2002.

The Dukes, who were outshot 19-8, surrendered a goal to SJU's Matias Mancini in the 80th minute, setting up the dramatic finish.

Domenic Nascimben was outstanding in net for the Dukes with five saves.

Maxi Hopfer and Ryan Goodhew were credited with assists for DU.

This is the first time DU is advancing to the Championship semifinal since 2006, following a 0-0 first round draw with Charlotte at Charlotte, N.C. (DU advanced on PK's 5-4).

The Dukes, who were the lone road team to win in the first round, will face No. 2 seed Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 at Hermann Stadium on the campus of top-seeded Saint Louis. The host Billikens (13-0-3) will take on No. 4 seed Fordham (7-9-2) in the first semifinal game on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Both Friday matches will air live on ESPN+.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Joseph's had five corners in the first 19 minutes but were held to just one shot on goal over that span.
  • Ryan Landry deflected a dangerous James Fletcher chance in the 25th minute.
  • DU came right back, but Harper Cook's flick of a Maxi Hopfer cross was stopped by the Hawks' Lars Haavie.
  • The DU back line continued to thwart SJU off corners, with a series of blocked shots as the Hawks spent a good portion of the first half in the attacking third.
  • Saint Joe's had a 10-5 advantage in shots and attempted 11 corners to zero for Duquesne in the first half.
  • Shots on goal were even at two after 45 minutes.
  • DU's first corner came in the 52nd minute.
  • In the game's best opportunity, SJU's James Fletcher broke free on DU keeper Domenic Nascimben in the 66th minute, but Nascimben came well off the line to make the save on his fellow Australian.
  • Nascimben made another outstanding save while on his back to stop Matias Mancini following an SJU flurry in the 70th minute.
  • Mancini scored the game's first goal in the 80th minute.
  • Duquesne pushed forward for the final eight minutes and was rewarded when Tom Tzabari found the back of the net off a Ryan Goodhew corner. The goal was the first of Tzabari's career. Goodhew grounded the ball to Hopfer who hit the near post, the ball popped back to Tzabari who got a foot on it while on his back.
  • Just under three minutes later, Goodhew placed free kick from deep near the sideline to the head of Borjas who put it inside the far post for the game-winner.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"We had a game plan going in and knew if we executed it to our full potential that we'd give ourselves a shot. We struggled to get results on the road all year, but the guys never lost that belief. We knew we could score goals and the guys just continued to keep that belief and that was the difference. This is a strong group of guys that really enjoy playing together and it shows. We have a group of upperclassmen who will be leaving us and nobody wanted it to be their last game. We knew we had a very good shot today, as long as we took care of business."
