ST. THOMAS, V.I. - Colorado's Tristan da Silva hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and the Buffs (4-1) went on to outscore Duquesne 16-8 in the extra session to pull away for an 84-76 win in the second round of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, V.I. on Saturday night.
Duquesne (1-4), which never trailed in regulation, was led by
Kevin Easley Jr. with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Tre Williams added 17 points and a career-high seven blocks and
Leon Ayers III had 15 off the bench for the Dukes who dropped their fourth in a row.
CU, which went 2-of-15 from the 3-point arc in regulation, hit a pair of 3-pointers in overtime to pull away.
Duquesne matched its largest lead when Ayers III hit his third - and final - 3-pointer to make it 60-49 with 7:29 left.
CU's Keeshawn Barthelemy hit CU's first 3-pointer - after 13-straight misses - to make it 60-53 with 7:00 left.
The 3-pointer helped the Buffs put together an 11-0 run that allowed them to tie it at 60-60 on a free throw with just over five minutes on the clock.
Toby Okani, who finished with nine points, scored back-to-back baskets, before CU made it 64-63 on a K.J. Simpson three-point play.
Colorado cut it to one twice, before Williams scored in the paint to give the Dukes a 68-65 lead with :17 left.
CU called a timeout and eventually swung the ball to da Silva who hit a 3-pointer from the corner to tie it.
Barthelemy gave the Buffs their first lead of the game on the first basket of overtime, a 3-pointer, that made it 71-68.
DU made it 73-71 on an Easley Jr. 3-pointer, but could get no closer as CU responded with a putback and another 3-pointer to build a 78-71 lead.
DU, which led 35-29 at the half, took a brief 11-point lead out of the break on a 3-pointer by Spears followed by buckets from Easley Jr. and Williams, before CU battled back to make it a 42-41 game with 15 minutes left.
Easley Jr. responded with a 3-pointer and Williams scored in the paint to up the lead to 47-41.
DU led 52-47 coming out of a media timeout, when Williams buried a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer and Ayers followed with a basket to make it 57-47 with 9:26 left.
The Dukes will finish their Paradise Jam stay versus Bradley on Monday, Nov. 22 at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
NOTES
- This was Kevin Easley Jr.'s fourth career double-double (19-12) and second in five games as a Duke. The 12 rebounds tied his career high accomplished twice while a freshman at Chattanooga.
- Tre Williams' seven blocks were three more than his previous career high of four set at Indiana State.
- This was Duquesne's first game against a Power 5 school since a 73-67 setback at the hands of Penn State on Dec. 19, 2018.
- The loss evened Keith Dambrot's record at 2-2 all-time vs. Pac-12 schools (he was 2-1 vs. the Pac-12 while at Akron).
- Duquesne's largest lead was 11, the last of which came at 60-49 with 7:03 left ...
