Dukes Defeat Wright State in Closing Minutes

Move to 7-0-1 on Rooney Field this season

PITTSBURGH - An own goal in the 89th minute was the difference as Duquesne (8-5-2, 3-2-2) clinched an undefeated home season with a 2-1 win over Wright State (4-9-1) on Tuesday night on Rooney Field.

With the win, the 2021 Dukes (7-0-1) became just the fourth team in program history to finish the home season without a loss joining the 2002 (7-0-2), 2006 (5-0-0) and 2011 (7-0-2) squads.

The win also kept DU undefeated in non-conference home games (8-0-1) since 2018.

Jordy Lopez's first career goal - off a pass from Ryan Goodhew - tied it in the 58th minute.

The game remained knotted until Kendall Newman knocked a long ball down the right side that was run down by Jordan Livits. Livits beat a defender, lured the keeper out and went to cross the ball when it glanced off a WSU defender for the game-winner.

The Dukes, who are in the hunt for an Atlantic 10 Championship appearance (top 8 teams qualify), play their A-10 regular-season finale at Dayton (5-8-3, 2-4-1) on Sat., Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

A-10 Championship seeds will be announced by the conference at the conclusion of play on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duquesne's Luke Alese lined a hard shot off the short right post in the 11th minute.
  • The Dukes held the Raiders without a shot for the first 25 minutes, until Zion Beaton, who began his career at Duquesne, put a hard attempt left of the frame.
  • Eric Zech stopped a long Presten Manthley run down the right side with beautiful slide tackle in the 43rd minute.
  • Manthey put a shot just off target on a free kick following a Duquesne yellow card with nine seconds left in the half.
  • There were just two shots on goal - one for each team - in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Alese and Jordy Lopez just missed connecting on a cross early in the second half.
  • Zach Mowka took a pass from Jordan Livits and put a hard shot on goal in the 54th minute.
  • Wright State broke the ice when Alex Hummel found Reece Allbaugh who one-touched the ball into the net in the 56th minute.
  • DU tied it two minutes later when Lopez headed in a corner from Ryan Goodhew. It was Lopez's first career goal.
  • The game remain tied until a Jordan Livits cross was knocked in by a WSU defender in the 88th minute.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"This season has been about overcoming adversity and working toward our principles in our play and representing ourselves to the best of our ability every time we step on the field. Tonight we saw a lot of guys who hadn't gotten a lot of minutes during the season step up and do the job they were put there to do. I give them a lot of credit and I give this team a lot of credit for fighting, continuing to move forward, and believing in what we're doing."
