Dukes Edged by Bonnies in Season-Finale

Late first half goal is the difference in road loss

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Duquesne women's soccer team closed out the season with a 2-1 loss at St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

The Dukes conclude the 2021 campaign at 4-10-2 and 2-7-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Meanwhile, the Bonnies improve to 5-4-1 in league play, 7-7-4 overall to secure the fifth seed in the A-10 Championship.

Duquesne weathered the initial push by the Bonnies in the first 20 minutes of the match.  Jaimi Araujo (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) got the ball near the end-line on a counter-attack and sent a cross from right to left in front of the net. The ball sputtered though a handful of players, before Hannah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) sent a harmless touch towards the left post. The ball was tucked just inside the post and beat the Bonnies' goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.

The goal was Nguyen's fourth of the season and tied her with Emma Bundy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) for the team lead with 12 points. Nguyen ended the season with a team-high four assists.

St. Bonaventure tied the match up 13 minutes later in the 34th-minute. A-10 leading goal scorer Cristina Torres got behind the Duquesne defense and beat goalkeeper Megan Virgin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) to even the score at 1-1.

Torres then added to her goal total with the eventual game-winning goal in the 43rd-minute. St. Bonaventure's Cristina Pickard crossed the ball from inside the box to Torres, who one-touched the ball into a wide open net to make the score 2-1.

The Dukes had a trio of corner-kick attempts in the second half, but were limited on scoring opportunities. DU made one final push in the closing minutes of the match, but the Dukes were unable to get a shot through on net.

St. Bonaventure held a slight 13-to-12 edge in shots.

Virgin made six saves in net for the Dukes.

Ashley Rodriguez (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) had a strong outing on the backend and became the only player on the team to play all 1,483 minutes this season. Rodriguez, Nguyen, Sarah Wilkinson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Lexy Kendro (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) were the only four players on the team to start all 16 games this season.
