Dukes Post Win No. 20

Tie school record for A-10 victories in 81-78 win over George Mason

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. - Sincere Carry scored a game-high 23 points, and Marcus Weathers added 16 points and 11 rebounds  to lead Duquesne (20-8, 10-6) to an 81-78 win over George Mason (15-14, 4-12) at UPMC Events Center on the campus of Robert Morris University.

The Dukes, who led by six with 37 seconds left, hit 7-of-10 free throws over the final 18 seconds to seal the school's third 20-win season in the past 48 years.

With the victory, the Dukes tied the school record for Atlantic 10 wins (10) and also ensured back-to-back winning conference seasons for just the second time in school history.

Duquesne, which shot 56 percent, built its 37-33 halftime lead to eight with just over 16 minutes left.

The Patriots, who were without leading scorer Javon Greene (coaches decision), saw second-leading scorer A.J. Wilson sidelined for nearly four minutes after injuring his wrist on a dunk attempt. Wilson, who finished with 14 points, returned with his wrist taped and pulled Mason to within two on a jump hook at the 11:42 mark.

The Patriots tied it at 50-50 before Maceo Austin, who finished with 10 points, drilled a 3-pointer. DU forced a turnover and Lamar Norman Jr. hit another 3-pointer to make it 56-50.

The Dukes went up 60-52 on a Weathers bucket, before GMU mounted a 9-0 run to take a 61-60 lead on Jamal Hartwell's 3-pointer.

Michael Hughes, who scored 12 points in 23 foul-plagued minutes, converted at three-point play to give DU at 63-61 lead with 4:21 left.

Hughes drew Wilson's fifth foul and converted the front end of a one-and-one. Weathers grabbed the miss and scored. DU then forced a turnover and Carry was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Carry made two to give DU a 70-64 lead with 2:38 on the clock.

The Dukes maintained at least a four-point lead until Josh Oduro cut it to two at 74-72 with 18 seconds left.

It was then that Duquesne began its parade to the foul line, which included six attempts in the final four seconds.

The Patriots, who shot 53 percent, outscored the Dukes 26-4 in second-chance points, while Duquesne was able to turn 20 GMU turnovers into 25 points.

Duquesne finished 19-of-33 from the foul line.

Duquesne completes the road portion of the A-10 schedule at VCU (18-11, 8-8) on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+/MASN).
