Dukes Top Charleston Southern in Season Opener, 3-1

Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the season opener, the Duquesne Dukes volleyball team (1-0) topped Charleston Southern (0-1), 3-1, in its first match at the UNCW Hampton Inns Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Duquesne earned wins in the first (25-17), third (25-18) and fourth set (25-21), while the Buccaneers were only able to come out and top in the second set (23-25).

The Dukes had four players with double-digit kills, led by Liz Wayne's career-high 14 kills (.458 hitting percentage). The balanced attack also featured Maria Mosbacher's 12 kills (.321 hitting percentage), while Summer Slade and Ego Onu (.714 hitting percentage) each tallied 10 kills apiece. Slade posted a double-double, adding 11 digs.

Claire Boe led the Dukes with 15 digs, while Morgan Kelly in her first game as Duke reached 11 digs. She added in seven kills.

Dani Suiter contributed 28 assists, while Hailey Poling posted 16.

Tomorrow, the Dukes take on North Florida at 2:30 p.m. and tournament host UNCW at 7:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first set, Duquesne held a slim 7-6 edge, before going on a 9-4 run to take a 16-10 lead.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth, with the Dukes taking a 20-13 advantage to force a CSU Timeout.
  • The Bucs rallied on a 3-0 on match point, but a Wayne kill on an assist from Poling gave Duquesne a 1-0 advantage.
  • Neither team led by more than five points in the second set, as Duquesne held a 14-9 lead.
  • The Bucs fought back to within three at 18-15 which prompted a 7-1 CSU run, retaking a 22-19 edge.
  • The Dukes did not give up, tying the game back up at 22-22 after a 3-0 run featuring two kills from Mosbacher and one from Wayne.
  • CSU posted back-to-back kills with the score tied at 23-23 to earn its only set win of the match.
  • In the third set, the Dukes busted a 7-0 run when the score was tied at 4-4 to take a 11-4 advantage.
  • The Bucs brought the set back to 12-9 after a 5-1 sprint.
  • Duquesne won the next three points and nine of the next 12, owning a commanding 21-12 edge.
  • CSU would finish the set on a 5-4 run, but a CSU attack error on match point gave Duquesne a 2-1 set edge after three sets.
  • The fourth set featured a similar story, with both teams battling back-and-forth until Duquesne earned a six-point edge at 19-13.
  • The teams would trade points, until CSU ripped off a 5-1 run, to slice the Duquesne lead to just 22-20.
  • The Dukes settled down, as Duquesne earned three of the final four points. Wayne earned the match winning kill off an assist from Suiter.
