PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's soccer team looks to build off of its first two games of the regular season this weekend, when the Dukes take on Appalachian State and Lehigh. The Dukes will make the trek to Boone, North Carolina to face Appalachian State on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. matinee start. Following the matchup with the Mountaineers, Duquesne will head back to the Bluff on Sunday, hosting Lehigh at noon at Rooney Field.
The home match against Lehigh, along with the men's soccer matchup against Oakland - will not be live streamed. Live stats will be available for both contests.
THE SERIES
- The Dukes and Mountaineers will meet for the first time ever on Friday afternoon at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The meeting also marks the first time Duquesne has played a team in the affiliation of Sun Belt Conference teams.
- Despite both Universities hailing from the same state, with campuses less than 300 miles away, Sunday's meeting with Lehigh also marks the first meeting between the two schools.
QUICK HITS
- In the season opener against West Virginia, Duquesne allowed just five shots on goal, but ultimately fell to the nationally-ranked Mountaineers, 2-0.
- The Dukes led for over 66 minutes of Sunday's home opener against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, after tallying a penalty kick score in the 22nd minute of the first half. With less than 40 seconds remaining in regulation, the Lions converted a PK of their own, tying the game in which ended in a tie after two overtime periods.
- Deena DeBaldo recorded the PK goal for Duquesne to give the Dukes its first goal and lead of the season. She deposited the shot to the top left corner of the net. The goal was the fourth of her career.
- Goalkeeper Megan Virgin has held her own in net, allowing just three goals through two games. In Sunday's game , Virgin made nine saves alone, including four in overtime. She made three impressive saves against West Virginia in the opener.
- Appalachian State (0-2) fell 3-0 to Radford and 2-0 to No. 23 Wake Forest in its first action of the season. The Mountaineers put together a 9-9-1 season a year ago, doubling its win total from 2017. In the preseason poll, Appalachian State was picked to finish seventh of 11 teams in the Sun Belt.
- Lehigh (0-1-1) dropped its season opener 2-0 to Delaware last Friday and battled Monmouth to a scoreless tie on Sunday to open its season. The Mountain Hawks made a postseason run to the Patriot League Tournament a season ago, defeating Bucknell (2-1 OT), and Colgate (2-1) before falling to Boston University 1-0 in the championship game. Lehigh was predicted to finish fourth in the Patriot League Coaches' Poll.
