PITTSBURGH – Led by 13 kills from
Morgan Kelly and
Liz Wayne, the Duquesne Dukes (7-11, 1-3 A-10) picked up its first Atlantic 10 victory and first win at home this season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) sweep over George Mason (4-11, 0-3 A-10) on Sunday afternoon at Mt. Lebanon High School.
Kelly posted an impressive .647 hitting percentage with her season-high 13 kills. She made just two attack errors on 17 total attempts. After missing the George Washington match with an illness, Wayne posted a .500 hitting percentage in her eighth double-figure kill match of the season.
Hailey Poling (21) and
Dani Suiter (20) combined for 41 of Duquesne's 43 assists in the match.
Defensively,
Ashley Larson tallied a match-high 13 digs, while Poling completed a double-double performance with 11 digs. Wayne earned three block assists against the Patriots.
The Dukes are idle until Friday, when Duquesne heads to Philadelphia to battle La Salle. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening set was highly competitive, featuring 15 tie scores and five lead changes. Neither team held more than a two-point advantage, until the Dukes recorded back-to-back kills along with a Patriot error to make the score 20-17. George Mason erased the lead with a 3-0 run to force a Duquesne timeout at 20-20. With the set tied at 23-23, back-to-back kills from Kelly and Maria Mosbacher gave the Dukes an early 1-0 lead.
- The second frame was tightly fought in the beginning, as the Dukes held 15-13 advantage. Duquesne would take control, finishing the set on an impressive 10-4 surge to take a 2-0 lead. Four Dukes tallied kills in the scoring run, with Wayne and Ego Onu each registering a pair.
- The Dukes took control in the third set with an 11-5 sprint to take a 19-12 lead. The Patriots cut the deficit to five at 19-14, 20-15 and 24-19, but the Dukes prevailed with a Mosbacher kill on match point to win the third set, 25-19 and to complete the sweep over George Mason.
- Duquesne led in kills (45-31), hitting percentage (.333-.127), assists (43-31), digs (44-36) and blocks (8-3).
