PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne rowing team will officially begin competition for the 2019 fall season in the Steel City on Saturday with the Head of the Ohio Regatta on the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers. More than 600 entries will compete on the day, as organizers expect the largest turnout for the regatta since 2004.
The action gets underway at 7:40 a.m. with the Dukes' first race beginning at 8:15 a.m. Duquesne will compete in the open 1x, novice 8, open 4, open 2- as well as open 8 events on the 2.6-mile course which begins at Washington's Landing and ends just before Point State Park.
Saturday marks the first time the Dukes will race at the Head of the Ohio since Oct. 3, 2015.
Events 16 (varsity 4) and 42 (varsity 8) will feature the most DU athletes competing on the day.
The races can be viewed anywhere along the Allegheny River from Washington's Landing down to the Veteran's Bridge. Trails run along both the North Shore as well as the Strip District/downtown sides of the river. In addition, there is a lookout along the trail by the David L Lawrence Convention Center.
Parking is not permitted on Herrs Island, however there will be a shuttle provided for spectators which boards at the lot at 15th and Smallman Streets (GPS:Â
https://goo.gl/maps/8ykRZ3DAkqF2) to the course. Shuttles to and from the lot to Herrs Island will run every 30 minutes between 5:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
