Goal in 65th minute propels Dukes to 1-0 win over GW

Jack Shearer's goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference as Duquesne (8-3-1, 3-1) battled to a 1-0 win over George Washington (3-8-1, 1-3) on Saturday night on Rooney Field. DU goalkeeper Robbie McKelvey was credited with two saves in notching his fifth shutout of the season. With the win, the Dukes remained undefeated at home at 6-0-1. Duquesne completes the non-conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday night at Cleveland State (7:00 p.m. on ESPN+).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams combined for just six shots (four by Duquesne) and one shot on goal (by George Washington) in the scoreless first half.
  • Robbie McKelvey saved a header from GW's Liam Emson from close range in the 32nd minute on the only scoring chance of the half.
  • Nathan Dossantos drilled a shot off the crossbar in the 57th minute. DU's Jack Shearer gathered the rebound and slid a shot wide left.
  • The game remained scoreless until Rob Dymond found Manel Busquets on the right side. Busquets crossed to Shearer who buried a shot for his fifth goal of the season.
  • Busquets just missed left on a long chip in the 88th minute when GW keeper Noah Lubin was caught well of the line.
  • GW finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots, including a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The two teams combined for 33 fouls and three yellow cards.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"There are always going to be games that aren't pretty. We've done it before this season - where you bend a little, but you don't break. It seemed like there was a little extra adversity out there for us tonight, but we overcame it and I'm proud of the guys for that. I'm proud of them for digging deep."
