RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA - The Duquesne rowing team took to the Schuylkill River for the 36th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple University on Saturday. The Dukes faced off against the host Owls, American, Army, Bryn Mawr, Colgate, Connecticut, Delaware, Drexel, Fordham, George Washington, Holy Cross, Lafayette, La Salle, Lehigh, Loyola, Manhattan, Marist, Penn State, Rochester, Susquehanna, St. Joseph's, Stockton, Thomas Jefferson, Washington College and Wesleyan.
The novice eight (coxswain Hannah Weber, stroke Celia Gambacorta, Hannah Straub, Hayley Meyer, Rachel Parshall, Sabrina Vazquez, Angie Van Sprang, Hannah Reed and Talia Roth) finished third in their heat to advance to the grand final later in the day. In that grand final, they crossed the line fifth just behind Fordham and Penn State.
The novice four (stroke Celia Gambacorta, Hannah Straub, Hayley Meyer, Rachel Parshall and coxswain Abby Griffith) placed fourth in their heat with only the top three advancing.
The second varsity four (stroke Antonia Maffia, Lauryn Garretson, Serena Benages, Ellen Wenzinger, and coxswain Mary Clay) finished third in a strong heat to advance to the grand final, where the Dukes finished third behind Temple and UConn while holding off Drexel, Marist and Lehigh for a bronze medal in the event.
The varsity four (stroke Meredith O'Neil, Rachel Kaup, Caroline Redd, Olivia Delaney and coxswain Caroline Dirr) raced a very solid heat finishing second to Temple and ahead of La Salle, Colgate, and American.
The second varsity eight (coxswain Sarah Coltson, Devon Eliason, Molly Miller, Mary Katherine Byrne, Serena Benages, Aleiia Asmundson, Maggie Cunningham, Liz Giglia and bow Amanda Pellegrino) held off Loyola in the heat to finish fourth behind Fordham and advance to the petite final, where the boat raced well and crossed the line fifth ahead of Holy Cross.
The varsity eight (coxswain Faith Caldiero, Lauren Murray, Jessica Goldstein, Allie Schmitt, Cass Holder, Sam Dunn, Britteny Raible, Rachel Pierce and bow Kasie Sayers) crossed the line 10 seconds behind the V8 from Fordham and ahead of the V8 from Lehigh to finish third and advance to the petite final. A battle that went the length of the race found Marist finishing first in 7:28 with Lehigh second in 7:33, Colgate third in 7:34, Duquesne fourth in 7:36, UConn fifth in 7:40 and Holy Cross sixth in 7:57.
Head coach Jenn Langzettel: "It was a solid weekend of racing and while the coaches are happy with where the team is at there is still a lot of work to be done and progress to be made. We are looking forward to the next couple weeks to see how much progress can be made."
