@DuqMSoccer Drops 1-0 Decision to Davidson

Dukes can't get one by Wildcats

Duquesne had a number of second half scoring chances, but could not put one by Davidson's Sawyer Gaffney in a 1-0 defeat on Rooney Field. Gaffney stopped seven shots to support a goal by Jackson Bracy in the 17th minute. The Dukes managed five of their seven shots on goal in the second half, but came up empty. The defeat ended the season for the Dukes (4-9-3, 2-4-2), while Davidson (9-6-2, 5-2-1) will move on to compete at the Atlantic 10 Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duquesne's Robbie McKelvey made a diving save on a hard shot from Jaylen Thompson in the 15th minute.
  • Davidson's Jackson Bracy made it 1-0 when he put it in the upper 90 off a pass from Thompson two minutes later.
  • Manel Busquets took a through ball but had his shot stopped by Sawyer Gaffney in the 29th minute.
  • Busquets and Olav Hovstad broke out on a long run late in the half. Busquets, with one Davidson defender back, came down the left and passed to Hovstad who put a shot wide in the 36th minute.
  • McKelvey extended to punch away a hard shot from Charlie Caswell in the 39th minute.
  • Shots were even at 5-5 in the first half. Davidson put four on net, to two for Duquesne.
  • Busquets ripped a shot from the top of the box that was grabbed by Gaffney in the 64th minute.
  • Noah Mehta bent a ball on net on a free kick from 28 yards out in the 70th minute, but it was knocked away by Gaffney.
  • Moritz Kappelsberger put a shot over the bar off a corner from Mehta in the 77th minute.
  • Lucas Hauth had a point blank shot stopped by McKelvey one minute later.
  • Duquesne had another chance in the 79th minute, when Busquets put a shot on net off a free kick. Gaffney saved it to Zach Hall, who followed with another shot from a close tight angle that was also stopped by Gaffney. Hall corralled the ball again, but hit the side of the net from nearly parallel of the goal.
  • The Dukes outshot the Wildcats 12-7, including 7-6 on goal.
  • Busquets paced DU with four shots, including three on net.
  • Duquesne, which started at least six freshmen in all 15 matches this season, started seven first-year players.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"I thought it was a great effort from our guys. We had quite a few chances, but Davidson's defense played well, their keeper played well and unfortunately for us it was one of those nights where it wasn't meant to be. I want to make sure I thank the seniors, they battled all year against some odds. I thought tonight was a night they will be able to look back on and be proud of. Thank you to them and we'll keep moving forward."
