Dukes Top Davidson to Open Campaign

Duquesne 187.50, Davidson 104.50

RICHMOND, Va. - The Duquesne swimming and diving team opened the 2017-18 season on Friday evening with a 187.50-104.50 triumph over Davidson in the Richmond Duals at SwimRVA and the Robins Center Natatorium.

The Dukes topped the Wildcats in 13 of 16 events on the night.

Freshman diver Colleen Rodrigues (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) highlighted the return of Duquesne diving by besting her Davidson competition in the 1-meter dive with 219.35 points. The Dukes were competing in diving on Friday night for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

The DU 200-yard medley relay team consisting of freshman Emma Brinton (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove), senior Kayla Owens (Youngstown, Pa./Greater Latrobe) as well as juniors Kristen McKnight (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and Emily Thirion (Warren, Ohio/Warren) earned a first-place finish with a time of 1:46.34.

McKnight added a first-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle, pacing the event with a mark of 24.10. The Dukes swept the first four places in that event, as McKnight was followed by Thirion second (24.35), sophomore Carson Gross (York, Pa./York Suburban) third (24.39) and senior Michelle Heim (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) fourth (24.45).

Senior Lexi Santer (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) bested the field in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 52.43 on the night.

The following Duquesne swimmers also defeated Davidson in their respective events:
200-yard freestyle: freshman Emma Brinton (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove)(1:54.16), junior Morgan Smith (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill)(1:55.74), sophomore Summer Svitavsky (Willoughby, Ohio/Hawken) (1:56.77) and freshman Cateri Christinis (Charleroi, Pa./Oakland Catholic) (1:58.23).
100-yard backstroke: freshman Clare Flanagan (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) (59.64)
100-yard breaststroke: sophomore Erin Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (1:05.97)
200-yard butterfly: senior Kayla Owens (2:07.91)
200-yard backstroke: junior Sydnee Karam (Nazareth, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic/West Virginia) (2:09.03)
200-yard breaststroke: freshman Audrey Campo (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) (2:23.68)
500-yard freestyle: sophomore Heather Svitavsky (Willoughby, Ohio/Hawken) (5:11.30)

DU will look to sweep the Richmond Duals for a second straight season as the Dukes return to action on Saturday morning facing off with host Richmond. The action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. DU topped the Spiders by a score of 158-135 last season. Richmond, the seven-time defending Atlantic 10 champion, defeated George Mason 170.50-123.50 on Friday night.
