JACKSONVILLE - Dillon Buechel threw for 394 yards and a school record-tying 6 touchdowns to lead Duquesne to a 54-35 win at Jacksonville.
Buechel, who completed 23-of-32 passes, including a streak of 16 in a row at one point, threw four of the strikes to Wayne Capers who finished with 235 yards on 9 catches. Capers' four TD catches also tied a school record.
Buechel, coming of a career-high four interceptions in DU's 36-28 loss to Kennesaw State last week, threw touchdowns passes on his seventh, ninth, eleventh, fifteenth and sixteenth passes during the streak that ended with a fourth quarter interception.
Duquesne trailed 14-13 when Buechel began his completion streak and led 48-28 when the streak ended.
Jacksonville, which scored three times off Duquesne turnovers, turned a DU fumble into a 22-yard Pernell Rattray touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead just three minutes in.
Duquesne answered with a 45-yard Austin Crimmins field goal, followed by an 11-yard Buechel to Capers TD to take a 10-7 lead after one quarter.
The Dolphins then mounted a 13 play, 75 yard drive to go back on top 14-10 on a one-yard Rylan Wells plunge.
Crimmins capped a 14 play drive with a 40-yard field goal to make it 14-13 with 4:10 left in the half.
DU forced a punt and took over on its own 35 with 1:50 to go in the half, when Buechel took charge, completing 6-of-6 passes for 59 yards as the Dukes took the lead again on an 11-yard Buechel to A.J. Hines touchdown pass with 41 seconds left.
The Dukes outgained the Dolphins 270-113 in the first half, with Buechel 13-of-20 for 191 yards.
Buechel picked up where he left off, finding Capers for a 65 yard TD pass on DU's third play of the second half to make it 27-14.
DU made it 34-14 when Buechel found Capers again, this time from 44 yards out.
Jacksonville responded with a 65 yard drive that ended in a 5-yard Jared Morris run. The Dukes fumbled on their next possession and Wells hit Morris with a 35 yard TD pass on the next play to make it 34-28 with 6:30 to go in the quarter.
Buechel then found Capers again for a 15 yard score and followed that with a 12 yard TD pass to Nehari Crawford to end a 79 yard drive with 13:35 to go.
C.J. Lewis ended Buechel's streak with an interception that resulted in a 3 yard Ulysses Bryant touchdown run that made it 48-35.
Duquesne's Riley Redman ended the scoring with a 5 yard run with 1:15 to go.
DU's 54 points were its most since a 56-14 win over La Salle on Nov. 5, 2005.
The Dukes, who finished with 32 first downs, outgained the Dolphins 619-233. Hines led all rushers with 134 yards on 28 carries.
Carter Henderson led the Dukes with 10 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Nate Stone added 8 stops for DU.
Duquesne is idle prior to opening Northeast Conference play at home against Robert Morris on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN3).
