PITTSBURGH - Duquesne jumped out to a 37-0 halftime lead in rolling to a 47-7 season-opening win over Kentucky Christian Saturday afternoon at Rooney Field.
Freshman P.J. Fulmore (18-128) and senior Klartel Claridy (9-105) both topped 100 yards rushing - the first time two Dukes topped 100 yards in the same game since 2011 - for DU which finished with 571 yards of total offense.
A third running back, junior Zach DeNardo finished with 59 yards and two touchdowns.
Duquesne's defense limited NAIA KCU to 276 total yards.
First-year University of Virginia transfer Dominique Terrell got the Dukes on the board early when he hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Beuchel to give the Dukes a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
On KCU's next possession, blitzing cornerback Trenton Coles sacked Knights' starter Graham Johnston, forcing a fumble that was scooped up by defensive lineman Dane O'Driscoll and taken 59 yards for a score that made it 14-0.
Rafiq Douglas capped an 81-yard drive with a 3-yard run to make it 21-0 after one quarter.
Austin Crimmins ended an 11-play drive with a 19-yard field goal to make it 24-0 with 10:46 left. DeNardo followed with 1-yard run before Claridy added a 43-yard run that closed out the first half scoring.
Duquesne, which substituted liberally in the second half, got a 24-yard field goal from freshman Cory Griffith in the third quarter and a 40-yard run from DeNardo in the fourth to close out the scoring.
KCU broke up the shutout on a 56-yard TD pass with 9:10 left.
The Dukes, who went 5-of-5 in the red zone, finished with a 27-15 advantage in first downs.
Seven Duquesne players contributed to 8.0 tackles for losses totaling 44 yards. Redshirt junior Christian Kuntz, who missed last season with a knee injury, led the Dukes with 2.0 TFLs. Kuntz led the nation in tackles for loss in his last full season - 2013.
