QUICK RECAP: The Duquesne women's soccer team are the 2015 Steel City Classic champions after sweeping the two-game event with a 2-0 win over Robert Morris on Friday and a 3-0 victory over Saint Francis U 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Dukes (6 points), who earned their first SCC crown, finished ahead of Pittsburgh (4 points, 1-0-1), SFU (1 point 0-1-1) and RMU (0 points, 0-2-0).
The Duquesne freshman stood out with Kristen Kotsopoulos scoring twice and Abby Losco finding the back of the net once and keeper Kyra Murphy making four saves in her college debut in the win over the Red Flash.
Saint Francis U has the first scoring opportunity when Jessica Keller had her chance blocked by freshman Casey Aunkst off a corner kick in the 18th minute. Six minutes later, freshman Katie O'Connor's blast was stopped by SFU keeper Romina Kunze from the 20-yard line. In the 20th minute, Caroline Lacy took a pass from Linnea Faccenda in the box, but was saved by SFU defender Casey Gallaher.
Duquesne finally got on the board when Kotsopoulos put a header off a Maggie Mayo pass past Kunze for a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Faccenda almost added to the lead twice -- in the 35th minute, her shot was punched out by Kunze and in the 39th minute, she beat the defense, but her shot went wide.
In the 44th minute, Losco Found a breaking A.J. Baroffio, but the shot went high and the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
In the 2nd half, the Dukes had the first scoring chance when Malea Fabean's shot in the 71st minute hit the cross bar. The Red Flash had a chance to make the contest level when Allison LaDuke went past three defenders and had a clear chanced, but the Red Flash were called off sides.
In the 79th minute, Losco intercepted the ball from Red Flash defender Bri Guy at the 30-yard line and dribbled the ball in deep, putting it past Kunze on the left side, making the score 2-0. In the 87th minute, Lacy found a breaking Kotsopoulos in the box who put the ball past Kunze, giving the Dukes a 3-0 lead.
COACH ALVINE QUOTE: "We're thrilled with how the weekend went. To go 2-0 is a perfect start to the season and to win the tournament we were hosting is the icing on the cake. We had a lot of players step up and play really well this weekend. We had a lot of goals from freshmen and a lot of contributions from everybody. We are looking forward to West Virginia on Sunday."
UP NEXT: The Dukes travel to Morgantown to face #10/12 West Virginia at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m.
