On Saturday the Duquesne women were in Nashport, Ohio for a scrimmage with the University of Dayton, Marietta College, and North Park University. The morning of racing was windy and cold with the wind reaching 15mph and a floating start. Due to a drop in the water level on Dillon Lake the course had to be shortened to 1500m for all races.
The first event of the morning was the women's second varsity eight in which Duquesne had two entries with one entry from Dayton. The "A" entry of coxswain Caroline Dirr, stroke Lauren Turner, Rachel Swain, Sydnie Pennington, Lindsay Wyllie, Meredith Starczewski, Anne Stevens, Marianna Manfredi, and Jenna Boyd crossed the line in first place in 5:36.5 with the `'B" entry of coxswain Grace Hindes, stroke Tory Snyder, Nicole Wozniak, Kaitlyn Clem, Emily Ames, Mary Kate Keenoy, Madeleine Troppe, Morgan Starczewski, and Alison Kane finishing close behind in second (5:43.54). The eight from Dayton finished third in 5:50.1.
The women's varsity eight was the second event of the morning with one entry from each team in attendance. Duquesne's eight (coxswain Faith Caldiero, stroke Serena Benages, Courtney Purslow, Alex Watts, Lauren Hughes, Hannah Mazur, Julia Borsari, Emily Herzig, Gretchen Swabe) finished in first with a time of 5:34.0. Dayton crossed the line second (5:41.93), Marietta in third (5:48.36) and North Park in fourth (6:31.36).
Next up was the women's varsity four of stroke Alison Kane, Anne Stevens, Mary Kate Keenoy, Emily Ames, and coxswain Grace Hindes finished in first place over the varsity four from Marietta with times of 6:28.69 and 6:34.69 respectively.
The final event of morning racing was the women's 3rd/Novice 8. The novice eight from Duquesne (coxswain Amanda Booth, Kira Butler, Olivia Delaney, Sam Dunn, Cass Holder, Mary Katherine Byrne, Antonia Maffia, Shelby Rocco, and Olivia Szallai) finished first in 6:09.0 over the third eight from Dayton (6:27.76) and North Park (7:16.0).
Conditions calmed slightly for afternoon racing and the sun began to shine through.
The varsity eight was the first event of the afternoon. Duquesne altered their line-up within the boat resulting in coxswain Faith Caldiero, stroke Courtney Purslow, Alex Watts, Lauren Hughes, Hannah Mazur, Julia Borsari, Emily Herzig, Gretchen Swabe, and Serena Benages. This line-up again saw a first place finish over the varsity eight from Dayton with times of 5:34.96 and 5:45.48 respectively.
The second eight listed above and the novice eight listed above went up again each other in the second eight event along with the second eight from Dayton. Duquesne's second eight finished first in 5:51.67 with the novice eight from Duquesne crossing the line second in 6:03.17. The second eight from Dayton finished third in 6:11.73.
In the second varsity four event the Duquesne boat of coxswain Grace Hindes, stroke Tory Snyder, Nicole Wozniak, Margot Gagen, and Maureen O'Brien earned a first place finish in 6:12.47. In second was Marietta in 6:27.96 with Dayton finishing in third with a time of 6:57.20.
The final event of the day was the varsity four event. Duquesne's entry of coxswain Jean Geary, stroke Kaitlyn Clem, Emily Ames, Mary Kate Keenoy, and Lindsay Snodgrass finished second (6:19.75) to the varsity four from Marietta (5:55.01). North Park finished third (6:43.45) with Dayton finishing fourth (6:54.14).
Next up for the Dukes the women of the varsity eight will travel to San Diego on Thursday, March 26th for the San Diego Crew Classic. The rest of the team will begin preparing for the Knecht Cup Regatta in Princeton, NJ April 11-12.
