Dukes Win NEC Showdown at Robert Morris, 16-7

Duquesne's football team won its third straight game over cross-town foe Robert Morris and improved to 5-3 on the season and 2-1 in Northeast Conference play with a 16-7 victory at a rainy Joe Walton Stadium in Coraopolis, Pa. The Colonials fell to 2-5, 1-2.

Sophomore running back Rafiq Douglas had a career day with personal bests of 32 carries, 172 yards, four receptions and 31 yards receiving. All four statistics were team season highs at the running back position.

After a scoreless first quarter, Duquesne lit the scoreboard first as Austin Crimmins connected on a 29 yard field goal with 9:22 remaining in the first half to give the Dukes a 3-0 lead.

Robert Morris took its first lead at the 3:14 mark with a five yard rush to make it 7-6. Crimmins cut the DU deficit to 7-6 with a season-long 45-yard field goal to make it 7-6 RMU to end the first half scoring.

Crimmins picked up where he left off in the second half by striking a 44 yard field goal to make it 9-7 Dukes with 9:38 remaining in the third, capping an eight play, 20 yard drive.

Duquesne scored for a third straight time, this time finding paydirt as Dillon Buechel connected with Nehari Crawford on an eight yard touchdown strike to take a 16-7 lead with 13:00 remaining in the contest. The play was set up by a 40-yard pass from Buechel to Chris King.

The Duquesne defense once again came up big as Christian Kuntz and Zach Zidian each had eight tackles. Kuntz had four solo stops to go along with 2.5 sacks for 20 yards and 3.5 tackles for a loss for 24 yards and a pass break-up. Zidian had a half sack for four yards, including a tackle for a loss of five yards.

Sam Martello had six stops (4 solo), a half tackle for a loss and an interception. Gaston Cooper also picked off a pass and returned it 17 yards. Carter Henderson also chipped in a tackle for a loss, a pass break-up and a blocked punt which led to a score.

The Dukes return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 as they host Wagner in a noon kickoff.
