QUICK RECAP: Linnea Faccenda scored the only of the evening as the Duquesne women's soccer team defeated Massachusetts 1-0 at Rooney Field on Thursday night. Keeper Kyra Murphy made eight saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season in the victory.
The Minutewomen, who dominated the shot category 22-9, has the first scoring chance of the evening in the 6th minute when Megan Burke created a turnover and dribbled 20 yards, fired a shot at Murphy, who stopped it on the short side. Five minutes later, Erin Doster rebounded a chip shot, but kicked it right into Murphy from 5 yards out. Duquesne's first scoring chances came in the 18th minute when headers by Katie O'Connor and Abby Losco went wide.
In the 29th minute, Doster dribbled 25 yards and fired shot off crossbar. The Dukes' almost got on the board right before halftime, but O'Connor's shot was wide left, keeping the match at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Three minutes into the 2nd half, UMass' Madison Smith had a chance to score, but Dukes defender Véronique Dagenais turned away Smith's attempt. Although the Minutewomen would take eight more shots, they were unable to get any past Murphy.
The game winner came in the 80th minute when Abby Losco took the ball down the left side and found a breaking Faccenda just outside the box. She tapped the ball past UM keeper Cassidy Babin on the right side for the game-winner.
UP NEXT: The Dukes remain home to take on Rhode Island (3-12-1, 0-7-0) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. This match is the season home finale -- seniors Caroline Lacy, Abby Weber, Allie Holland, Amy Vinopal, Danya Fenech and Ashley Stratton will all be honored in a prematch ceremony.
