QUICK RECAP: In a battle of the last two Atlantic 10 volleyball champions, Duquesne fell to Dayton 3-1 in the conference opener on Friday night at the Palumbo Center.
Arielle Love led Duquesne with 18 kills while hitting .353. Liis Kullerkann tied her season-high with 10 kills. Patti Abshire had 18 digs and Mary Henry 42 assists for the Dukes.
UD's Jenna Jendryk led all players with 20 kills. Amber Erhahon had a match-best nine blocks and Jane Emmenecker recorded 50 assists.
With Dayton ahead 8-6 in the 1st set, the Flyers rattled off six straight points to take a 14-6 lead. The closest to tying the Dukes would get was seven points late in the set when a Liis Kullerkann block made the score 21-14. UD closed out the set with four straight points to win 25-14. Duquesne hit .097 for the set, while Dayton hit .378 and added 17 kills.
The 2nd set was tied at 6-6 until the Flyers scored six of the next eight points to take a 14-8 advantage. The Dukes came back to tie the score at 19-19 after a Lacey Levers kill, however Dayton scored the next five points to take a 24-19 lead. A Dukes error gave UD the set win 25-20 and a 2-0 match lead. Dayton registered 17 kills to Duquesne's nine.
The Dukes took the early lead in the 3rd set, going up 3-2 and maintaining the lead for the next 12 points until an attack error by Duquesne tied the set at 9-9. The Dukes would quickly regain the lead and took a 20-15 advantage, forcing a UD timeout. Love's kill ended the set 25-21. Duquesne finished the set with 17 kills, seven by Love.
Trailing the majority of the 4th set, the Dukes were able to tie the score at 19-19 after back-to-back-to-back kills from Molly Davet, Kullerkann and Love. However, UD would regain the lead on the next point on a block. Duquesne held off two set points before a Flyers kill ended the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
UP NEXT: The Dukes remain home and will host Saint Louis (11-4, 1-0 A-10) on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
